Top 10 Patterns from Lewis Smith

Top 10 Patterns from Lewis Smith

No one pulled this off better than David Williams, who focused on skipping a swim jig under docks to capitalize on the shad spawn en route to winning the tournament. Nearly everyone behind him tried to follow suit, albeit with a multitude of patterns. READ MORE »

Top 10 Patterns from Lake Champlain

Top 10 Patterns from Lake Champlain

Prespawn and spawning smallmouths would win a lot more often on Lake Champlain if the catch-and-keep fishing season opened earlier in Vermont and New York. As it is, the tail end of the smallmouth spawn usually butts into the start of the tournament season, and smallmouths become key for only a short period of time. This year, due to a wet and cool spring, the big pond was running a little behind schedule when the Costa FLW Series event presented by Power-Pole got underway. As a result, the Northern Division opener featured bag after bag of spawning smallmouths. Though Ron Nelson needed to add in some largemouths for the win, the sheer number of 3-pound smalljaws that pros ran back to Plattsburgh was impressive. READ MORE »

Top 10 Patterns from the Mississippi River

Top 10 Patterns from the Mississippi River

The most recent FLW Tour event was the first to be held on the Mississippi River in La Crosse, Wis., giving anglers a clean slate to work from in terms of prior tournament knowledge and history. The number of FLW Tour pros who had sampled Pools 7, 8 and 9 in May prior to the tournament was low. Bryan Schmitt of Deale, Md., won the event by fishing grass in Pool 8 where a new crop of fresh prespawn bass was holding up for the next mating opportunity. Schmitt was really the only one in the top 10 who committed to grass exclusively for four days.Behind him, the other nine competitors found success on a variety of target areas, including wing dams, flooded bushes and trees, and current breaks. Lake Chickamauga Top 10 Patterns

Lake Chickamauga Top 10 Patterns

Eventful weather was the name of the game at the Costa FLW Series Southeastern Division finale on Lake Chickamauga presented by Lowrance. Day one was cancelled due to predicted high winds. The forecasted wind didn’t materialize, but torrential rain did. That led to even muddier conditions and rising water levels. William Weidler from Bessemer, Ala., won the tournament with his go-to bait – a 1/2-ounce Dirty Jigs No-Jack Swim Jig with an H&H Swamp Frog trailer. Like Weidler, most other anglers also picked some variety of jig as their preferred lure. But a couple of anglers threw the bass a curveball. READ MORE »

Top 10 Patterns from the Harris Chain

Following a warm winter, the FLW Tour landed at the Harris Chain at the tail end of the bass spawn. While there were still a few fish on beds early in the event, by day three it became apparent that those who were working the offshore game plans were ahead of the curve. READ MORE »

Lake Travis Top 10 Patterns

Lake Travis Top 10 Patterns

While the ongoing duel between FLW Tour titans Mark Rose and Bryan Thrift has certainly stolen the show at the first two FLW Tour events of 2017, there were other interesting story lines worth noting from the FLW Tour event on Lake Travis presented by Quaker State. Rose won the event fishing out on big main-lake points, focusing on the steeper, deeper breaks off those points. But others in the top 10 fished a host of patterns and lures. READ MORE »

James Watson of Nixa, Mo., won the Walmart FLW Tour Invitational presented by Quaker State on Norris Lake with topwaters – mostly buzzbaits and River2Sea Whopper Ploppers. But Watson wasn’t the only one who dialed in the buzzing bite at Norris. More than half of the pros in the top 10 had a buzzbait figured into their game plan. Here is how other pros fished to make the cut at Norris. READ MORE »

Lake Dardanelle Top 10 Patterns

Lake Dardanelle Top 10 Patterns

Water level was a constant concern for anglers in the Costa FLW Series Central Division opener presented by Mercury on Lake Dardanelle, as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had been pulling down the lake level to manage the influx from recent heavy rains. A severe storm dumped a couple of inches on the area a day before the tournament, so the ups and downs, along with resulting murkiness, presented significant challenges. Floridian Jeff Fitts overcame significant adversity to pull off an amazing comeback victory with 48 pounds, 10 ounces. READ MORE »

He also caught fish by dragging a Texas-rigged 10-inch worm past brush piles in 6-8 feet. Lieblong amassed a three-day total of 46 pound, 3 ounces. READ MORE »
