Wind up, water down, anglers cool for TBF’s final day

Wind up, water down, anglers cool for TBF’s final day

Torrential downpours and random streaks of lighting didn’t stop the bass from biting on Nickajack Lake yesterday. Limits were plentiful and weights were up. Today, however, the 14 anglers competing on the final day of the 2011 TBF National Championship are dealing with completely different conditions: winds gusting to 20 mph, a rising barometer and potentially muddy water. The storms dumped over 2 inches of rain on the region yesterday and last night. The lake level, however, is down 18 inches as the TVA opened the floodgates in anticipation of the torrential downpours. It’s just another curve ball in what will likely be a thrilling final day of competition. READ MORE »

Beale maintains lead at TBF National Championship

KIMBALL, Tenn. - A steady, pounding rain, gusty winds and sporadic lightning didn’t stop the action on Nickajack Lake during the second day of TBF National Championship competition. Fifty-eight TBF anglers brought limits to the scales despite the rapidly deteriorating conditions - and many of those limits were heavier than yesterday’s. Kenny Beale Jr.’s limit, however, wasn’t. It weighed 16 pounds, 6 ounces, nearly 4 pounds lighter than his first day’s limit, but that didn’t matter. The Danville, Va., angler managed to fend off Mid-Atlantic Division challenger and second-place angler Ed Loughran to keep the overall lead with 36 pounds, 13 ounces. That included an 8-ounce dead fish penalty. READ MORE »

Water’s up, weather threatens on Nickajack

Water’s up, weather threatens on Nickajack

KIMBALL CITY, Tenn. — The 94 anglers competing in The Bass Federation Championship on Nickajack Lake were greeted by an unexpected sight as they backed their boats into the water Friday morning on the tournament’s second day. Water lapped at the edges of the docks at the Shellmound boat ramp and covered the walkway leading out to the dock where TBF directors ran the takeoff. The lake not only came up, it was at least a foot higher than the previous morning. While that may kill any notion of sight-fishing for bedded bass, the general consensus is that it will actually help. READ MORE »

Beale, Loughran battle for overall lead, Mid-Atlantic Division

Lake Nickajack gave up plenty of limits 49, to be exact for the 94 anglers in the 2011 Bass Federation championship, but one stood head-and-shoulders above the rest. Virginia angler Kenny Beale Jr. weighed a whopping 20-pound, 7-ounce limit, besting fellow Mid-Atlantic Division angler Ed Loughran by 2 ½ pounds. Beale, a 34-year-old truck driver from Danville, Virginia had a phenomenal day, thanks in large part to conditions that fit his favorite style of fishing. READ MORE »
