Top 10 Patterns from Lake Champlain

Top 10 Patterns from Lake Champlain

Champlain kicked out absolutely stupendous weights this time around. It took 5 pounds, 7 ounces more to win this year than it did last year, and 19 pounds per day to make the top 10 cut. Averaging exactly 15 pounds per day was enough to land Alex Davis in 110th, and it took more than 16 1/2 pounds per day to get paid. All that came with minimal involvement from largemouths or the Ticonderoga waters in the southern end. READ MORE »

Top 10 Baits from Lake Champlain

Top 10 Baits from Lake Champlain

The Costa FLW Series Northern Division event presented by Power-Pole on Lake Champlain was utterly dominated by spawning smallmouths. As such, finesse offerings ruled the day. If you’re ever on the hunt for a good bed bait for brown fish, just grab something that’s small and twitchy or swimmy. READ MORE »

Hesson Takes Co-angler Title

Hesson Takes Co-angler Title

Co-anglers usually smash ’em in the Northern Division of the Costa FLW Series, and this week’s opener was no different on Lake Champlain. The tournament, which was presented by Power-Pole, saw all but one of the top 10 co-anglers catch a limit on the final day, and five of them averaged 15 pounds or better. Weighing more 16 pounds each day, Kevin Hesson of Seneca, Pa., earned the win with 49-15 total. Hesson earned a new Ranger Z175 with a 90-hp outboard plus $1,250. READ MORE »

Nelson goes back-to-back on Champlain

In 2017, Ron Nelson of Berrien Springs, Mich., won the Costa FLW Series Northern Division opener on Lake Champlain with 54 pounds, 9 ounces and a mix of largemouths and smallmouths. Champlain Midday Update – Day 3

Champlain Midday Update – Day 3

If the final day was as calm and sunny as day two, the top 10 pros in the Costa FLW Series Northern Division event presented by Power-Pole would be smashing bedding smallmouth right now. Unfortunately, the weather has intervened a little – there have been 2- to 3-footers rolling around Plattsburgh from the south all morning with intermittent showers as well. Oddly enough, the whole lake hasn’t been rough – south of Burlington the wind was calm and the lake was nearly slick most of the morning. READ MORE »

Champlain Top 5 Patterns – Day 2

Champlain Top 5 Patterns – Day 2

Though pros are fishing different areas of the lake and dabbling with the occasional largemouth, the Costa FLW Series Northern Division opener presented by Power-Pole on Lake Champlain has basically turned into a spawning smallmouth shootout. Because the smallmouths are bedding so heavily north of Plattsburgh and in the main lake, it took a whopping 19-pound average to make the cut. The top three are both over 40 pounds, and it seems like weights may only slack off a little on the final day. READ MORE »

Carnright Stays in Control

Carnright Stays in Control

Perfect weather and another cavalcade of smallmouths were the primary features of day two of the Costa FLW Series event presented by Power-Pole on Lake Champlain. Hanging tight to the lead, Brett Carnright of Plattsburgh, N.Y., put 19 pounds, 8 ounces on the scale and now boasts a 40-15 total. In second, last year’s champion Ron Nelson of Berrien Springs, Mich., weighed 19-13 for a total of 40-8 and sits just 7 ounces off the lead. READ MORE »

Champlain Midday Update – Day 2

Champlain Midday Update – Day 2

You could hardly have ordered better weather for day two of the Costa FLW Series tournament presented by Power-Pole at Lake Champlain. It was a little windy in the morning, but it’s largely calmed down and there were swathes of the lake that were absolutely flat around 10:30 a.m.. The sun is high and bright, and there isn’t a cloud in the sky – sure, it was a little nippy at takeoff, but it’s going to be glorious at weigh-in. READ MORE »

Champlain Top 5 Patterns – Day 1

Champlain Top 5 Patterns – Day 1

It may have happened before, but it’s certainly been a long time since a big tournament has hit the smallmouth spawn on Champlain with such precision. For some reason, the lake is a little behind this year, even more than it was in 2017, and the smallies are all over the beds. Of the top 10, only Cory Johnston caught any largemouth at all, and everyone targeted smallmouths on beds. READ MORE »

Carnright Cracks 21

Carnright Cracks 21

Day one of the Costa FLW Series tournament presented by Power-Pole on Lake Champlain was a smashfest – everyone in the top 10 weighed 19 pounds or better and the vast majority of that was brown. Leading the way, Carnright caught 21 pounds, 7 ounces to get things underway. In second, Austin Felix tuned up 20-15 of smallmouths and sits just 8 ounces off the lead. READ MORE »

Champlain Midday Update – Day 1

Champlain Midday Update – Day 1

We lit out to the north of Plattsburgh to get things rolling, and the anglers are doing very well with a variety of techniques. So far, sight-fishing for smallmouths seems to be the leading tactic, but there are folks doing other things as well. Carolina rigs for smallies have made an appearance, and spinnerbaits and jerkbaits have put fish in the boat too. The largemouth guys are mostly sight-fishing, flipping and tossing wacky rigs, usually around the reeds. READ MORE »

Game Day on Champlain

Game Day on Champlain

Kicking the season off at Lake Champlain worked great last year, and this year the Costa FLW Series Northern Division is once again getting things rolling on the big Northern lake. Again, there’s a new record field size for the Northern Division with a total of 205 boats. The tournament, which is presented by Power-Pole and hosted by the City of Plattsburgh and the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau, should treat anglers and fans to an impressive parade of big smallmouth bass for the next three days. Spawning Smallies and More at Champlain

This year’s kickoff to the Costa FLW Series Northern Division could turn out to be nearly a carbon copy of last year’s opener – a big field, tons of spawning smallmouths, some largemouths and an all-around great time. Presented by Power-Pole and hosted by the City of Plattsburgh and the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau, this year’s opener takes place June 21-23 on Lake Champlain, one of the most scenic and productive fisheries in the world.
