LARGEMOUTH BASS

The Largemouth Bass is a freshwater gamefish native to North America.  Today, they can be found throughout the world as a result of stocking and illegal transport methods, as far as Japan, South Africa and Australia!  Largemouth bass live in a variety of waterways including lakes, rivers, creeks, ponds, reservoirs and more.

Generally speaking, largemouth bass are a green olive color with a blackish horizontal band, called a lateral line.  Males are generally smaller than females, and the unofficial World Record is just over 25 pounds!  The average size of a Largemouth is around two and a half to three pounds.  Largemouth can thrive in a variety of water conditions, clear, dark, muddy, tinted and can often be found near aquatic vegetation.  Overall, largemouth seem to prefer warmer water than their smallmouth cousin.

Largemouth bass eat a variety of different things that is determined by both their size, and what is available in their environment.  Younger and smaller Largemouth bass mainly eat small bait fish, small crawfish, scuds, shrimp and even insects.  Adult largemouth bass will consume larger prey such as, bluegill, shad, crawfish, frogs, snakes, salamanders, crappie and even small birds.

They are a favorite among anglers because they are a lot of fun to catch.  The most commonly used baits for bass fishing are artificial lures.  An artificial lure looks like natural prey, but are made of plastic, rubber, silicone, or balsa wood.  However, anglers also use live bait such as nightcrawlers, minnows, shiners and crawfish.  Some of the most popular artificial lures for largemouth are plastic worms, jigs, topwater (frogs, poppers, buzz baits), spinnerbaits, crankbaits and many more.  When you hook a Largemouth, it is very common for the fish to become airborne in an effort to get away.
