FLW Italy, one of eight FLW International Division partners, enjoyed solid participation and a successful start to its tournament season, which kicked off in early April at Lago di Bolsena (Lake Bolsena). The Italian contingent fielded 48 teams at the opener, and will resume competition in July.

Here’s a summary of the Bolsena event, as well as the tournament format used by FLW Italy.

Lake Bolsena

Lake Bolsena is a crater lake formed by volcanic activity in the central region of the country. Flanked by rolling hills, the lake is oval in shape – longer in the north-south direction – with an outlet at its southern end. The maximum depth is 495 feet.

Tournament format and schedule

The FLW Italy Pro Series Tour includes a three-tournament season and a two-day finale, where a maximum of 30 two-angler teams will qualify to compete.

The 2018 season kicked off April 8 at Lake Bolsena in Viterbo. Stop No. 2 will be at Brenta/Piovego River in Padova on July 1. The Tevere River in Rome will host the final regular-season event on Sept. 2.

Qualifiers to the finale will compete at Lago di Garda in Verona on Sept. 29-30.

Lake Bolsena standings

Weights were strong at the season opener on Bolsena, even if they were a bit lower than is usual for the fishery.

Tournament winners Jacopo Gallelli and Michele Fanfani weighed in 19 pounds, 6 ounces. Six teams topped 15 pounds, and 18 teams caught at least 12 pounds.

Gallelli and Fanfani dealt with cold water and heavy fishing pressure en route to the win, and they relied on a high-tech approach to find the winning fish. Custom maps that they created with their depth finders, as well as Spot-Lock and other features of their Minn Kota trolling motor were keys to their success.

In the morning, Gallelli and Fanfani targeted shallow water near a drop-off to land a pair of quality keepers with a swim jig and swimbait combo, which they fished very aggressively to trigger reaction strikes. Once the sun reached its apex they moved to deeper water and targeted scattered rocks – transitional areas – where prespawn bass were set up. Long casts and fast retrieves were key to their success.

The champs eventually landed their limit and tried for the final three hours of competition to upgrade, but were unsuccessful. High skies, little wind and inactive fish made it tough to get a big bite, and the only fish they landed late in the day were too small to help their overall weight.

According to Gallelli and Fanfani, Lake Bolsena usually produces multiple bags of more than 20 pounds during the prespawn, and they were surprised at weigh-in to see the weights a little lower than usual. Never mind the struggle, they were able to secure the victory in the first-ever FLW Italy tournament with nearly 19 1/2 pounds of the famous “volcano big bass” of Lake Bolsena.

Slow Down in Brush for More Success

Slow Down in Brush for More Success

Many times, hitting as many brush piles as possible is the key to success, with Bryan Thrift’s 2015 FLW Tour win on Lake Eufaula serving as a prime example of that strategy. However, with the fishing pretty tough on Lake Hamilton, both Wade Strelic and Joel Willert turned to more methodical approaches to generate bites. READ MORE »

Training Future Pros at Summer Camp

There were more than a dozen FLW pros in attendance for the first round of lakeside seminars at the Costa FLW High School Fishing Campthis morning. But within the crowd, chances are high that there are at least a couple dozen more future pros among the 230 high schoolers who traveled to Kentucky Lake to attend the camp.  It’s clear from the level of knowledge and experience the campers have exhibited during the seminars that these are some of the more accomplished high school anglers in the country. Their dedication is obvious, too. Campers came from as far away as Nevada, California, Vermont and even Montreal.  READ MORE »
