Vibrating Jigs Redux

Vibrating Jigs Redux

Vibrating jigs have been in the arsenals of pretty much everyone, including most pros in the top 10 and both winners. That, in itself, is not surprising, as a vibrating jig is popular in Florida, where the first two tournaments were held. The interesting part is how certain guys, such as Tim Frederick, Chris Johnston, Jeff Gustafson and Bryan Schmitt, outfished everyone else using the same lure. While watching them on the water, it became clear they were doing things differently. READ MORE »

Fish Don’t Discriminate, So Why Should We?

Fish Don’t Discriminate, So Why Should We?

When I started fishing competitively in 2013, that winning attitude was the attitude and mindset I had going into tournaments. I quickly learned the obstacles I’d face as a female in the sport. Avoiding these obstacles meant not lowering my morals to the stereotypical “male agenda” by posing in a bikini or being a victim of degrading chatter like “girls can’t do it, you are just a pretty face, etc.” I wanted to be recognized and remembered as the strong-minded, hard-working, loving and ambitious, Christian, female athlete that I am. Studio Notes - Lake Okeechobee

Studio Notes - Lake Okeechobee

Years ago this type of “crowdsourcing” among competitors was not exactly so fluid. Professional bass fishing was a game of guarded discoveries – poker face included. Indeed, it’s a modality that still works exceptionally well for those who don’t want their heads filled with multiple possibilities at one time. Believe me, I get it. Multitasking has never been my strong suit. My early attempts at information sharing resulted in being so spun out I couldn’t even decide which ramp to put in at during practice. READ MORE »

Bryan Schmitt and Mark Rose battled with Frederick from the beginning, but in the end a true Florida giant sealed the deal for the second-year Tour pro. For the win, Frederick earned $100,200 and goes into the next event on his home waters of the Harris Chain with all the momentum in the world. READ MORE »

Florida’s Frederick Wins FLW Tour at Lake Okeechobee presented by Evinrude

CLEWISTON, Fla. – When Leesburg, Florida, angler Tim Frederick turned pro and began competing on the Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Tour, the first event of his career was at Lake Okeechobee in February of 2016. Frederick managed to catch just one bass in two days of competition at that tournament and finished in 169th – last place. On Sunday, Frederick redeemed himself... READ MORE »

Okeechobee Day 4 Coverage

Though a crew of absolute hammers have made the final cut, it looks like a battle between the top three. Leading now, Tim Frederick hails from Leesburg, Fla., and has weighed more than 23 pounds each of the last two days. After a slight stumble on day three, Bryan Schmitt fell off the lead and is less than a pound back. In third, Mark Rose is in striking distance and probably the most accomplished angler in the top 10 – absolutely a threat. READ MORE »

Schmitt Drops 24-11

If you listened to the dock talk, you’d have thought the anglers were fishing the Dead Sea. Fortunately, changes aside, Lake Okeechobee still can produce like few other fisheries, and she certainly showed off Thursday on day one of the 2018 FLW Tour’s kickoff event, as nine anglers cracked the 20-pound mark, with leader Bryan Schmitt of Deale, Md., weighing in a 24-pound, 11-ounce bag. Becker’s on Base

Becker’s on Base

Pennsylvania’s Matt Becker wasn’t a popular pick this week in FLW Fantasy Fishing. The FLW Tour rookie has little experience outside of the Great Lakes and Northeast, and logic suggested that Becker was sure to get a whipping at stop No. 1 on Florida’s massive Lake Okeechobee. After all, the Big O’s maze of grass flats is certainly outside Becker’s deep-and-clear comfort zone. READ MORE »

Okeechobee Top 5 Patterns - Day 1

Okeechobee Top 5 Patterns - Day 1

Florida’s fish and Lake Okeechobee are known to be fickle. Both held true Thursday on day one of the FLW Tour event presented by Evinrude on Lake Okeechobee. An awful practice period turned into a great first day, with 10 bags cracking 20 pounds, led by Bryan Schmitt’s 24-11. Of course, a fickle nature means things can change overnight, and with a heavy wind switch forecast for day two, it just might. That said, many of the top 5 – though pleasantly surprised by their weights – are still optimistic for the remainder of the tournament. READ MORE »
