Bay of Quinte Next Up for FLW Canada
Second qualifier of the season to take place July 22-23
The second stop of the 2017 FLW Canada season heads to the world-famous Bay of Quinte, where the city of Quinte West will host the event July 22-23. The big bay is known for phenomenal fishing of all sorts from huge walleye, musky, pike, slab perch, crappies, and of course, big smallmouths and largemouths.
With the bay sitting right off of Lake Ontario, most anglers picture hauling big brown fish from the massive waters of the Great Lake. However, what makes this an interesting event is the fact that Lake Ontario waters are off limits. The Bay of Quinte does still have a great population of bronzebacks – and big ones – but 25-pound bags of smallmouth have been taken out of play by eliminating the lake for fish conservation reasons. Because of that, largemouths will be the major player in this event.
Former FLW Tour co-angler Spiro Agouros has been fishing as a pro on the FLW Canada circuit and is poised to qualify for his third consecutive Canadian Championship. While he loves catching bass, he prefers largemouths, which is why this event could setup well for him.
"I literally caught 100 fish yesterday, but those 2- to 3-pound fish will not help here,” explains Agouros. “Quinte is a megatropolis of bass, and finding 4- and 5-pound fish has been tough for me so far this week. I know they are here, and we will figure it out before Saturday. Regardless if I do or not, I'm having a blast with setting the hook every second cast."
Limits are expected to be easy this weekend for all teams with the huge fish population from Quinte West. It will likely take close to a 4-pound average to move on because the top five teams automatically advance to the championships in Buckhorn, Ontario, this September with host emcee, FLW's very own Chris Jones!
