Why Up a Creek?

Why Up a Creek?

Heading way up the river in August has turned into a Forrest Wood Cup tradition. When Jacob Wheeler won in 2012, he did it largely in the Chattahoochee River, far from takeoff and the clear waters of Lake Lanier. In 2015, tons of weight came from far up the creeks and rivers of Lake Ouachita. Brad Knight won there, and Zack Birge (eighth) and Mark Daniels Jr. (ninth) both caught nearly all their fish at the extremes. READ MORE »

The End of Hanselmania

A couple of years ago, Ray Hanselman accomplished something that no other professional angler ever achieved – nor is ever likely to again. Top 10 Patterns from the 2016 Cup

Top 10 Patterns from the 2016 Cup

John Cox of Debary, Fla., outfoxed 49 other competitors in the 2016 Forrest Wood Cup presented by Walmart at Wheeler Lake by running his aluminum boat far back in Cotaco Creek to tap into a population of resident bass that few others could reach. His efforts earned him $300,000 and a Forrest Wood Cup for his trophy case. Cox’s back-of-the-creek strategy was one of two effective patterns utilized on Wheeler during Cup week. The other dominant player in the event was targeting schooling fish. Here is a breakdown of how the second- through 10th-place finishers fished at the 2016 Forrest Wood Cup. READ MORE »

The Tin Man Wins the Cup

The Tin Man Wins the Cup

The modern era of tournament bass fishing is one where bigger and faster is often equated with better. From 21-foot fiberglass bass boats with 250-hp outboards and 70-mph top speeds to thousands of dollars worth of big-screen electronics, bass anglers tend to favor “maxed-out” equipment. John Cox believes differently. For Cox, tournament fishing is more about having the right equipment and mastering how to use it. In his case, it’s a lightweight aluminum boat with minimal electronics. The Florida proved that his system can not only win, but it can win big this week at the Forrest Wood Cup presented by Walmart at Wheeler Lake. He used these “simple” tools to unlock a pattern that has come to define Cox’s career: targeting unpressured resident fish in extremely shallow, difficult-to-reach places. The program earned Cox the wire-to-wire victory at the Cup and its $300,000 championship prize. READ MORE »

Auten trails by only 9 ounces. Also, Auten’s weights have increased each day, while Cox’s weights have decreased. Cox backed up his day-one catch of 16 pounds, 11 ounces with 15-10 today to move his two-day total to 32-5. Cox leads current runners-up Jacob Wheeler and Michael Neal by 6 pounds, 7 ounces.
