With cooler weather blowing in, patches of mist and rain whisking over the lake, and whitecaps in the main channel, day one of the Rayovac FLW Series presented by Mercury on Lake Guntersville is proving to be a challenge for the field.

The tactics in play so far are very diverse – anglers can be seen flipping grass in the backs of coves, throwing umbrella rigs on the main channel, tossing lipless crankbaits and ChatterBaits in deeper grass and fishing just about everything imaginable on the bridges. The field is also pretty spread out, with good numbers to be found from Browns Creek all the way up to Goose Pond. So far, there isn’t anything in particular that has taken the lead, though nearly everyone is targeting prespawn bass of some ilk.

Despite the conditions, guys are still catching fish. Mark Rose, Drew Benton and Randy Haynes have checked in with limits, Alex Davis had four when we left him, Stephen McKinnie had a limit and was working on more and both Joe Holland and Marco Valdez have enough in the box already that another bite or two could make things very interesting.

Despite the yucky weather, we’re going to see some good fish at weigh-in.
