More Top Patterns from Amistad

More Top Patterns from Amistad

A common theme was evident in the top patterns from Lake Amistad last week at the opener of the Rayovac FLW Series Texas Division. Almost every angler in the top 10 was catching fish that were transitioning from wintertime haunts to prespawn staging areas. A few even caught fish that were “moving up” to where they’ll eventually spawn. To read about the top five patterns, including Ray Hanselman’s winning techniques, click here. What follows are the patterns of the sixth- through 10th-place anglers. READ MORE »

Carrillo Cool in Victory

Carrillo Cool in Victory

He’s probably the most relaxed competitor this writer has ever encountered in tournament fishing. Just don’t mistake his cool demeanor on the outside for a lack of intensity deep down inside. Ricardo Carrillo of Laredo, Texas, was all business on the water at this week’s Rayovac FLW Series Texas Division event on Lake Amistad presented by Frabill. Carrillo caught 11 pounds, 15 ounces, 6-10 and 5-4 in three days for a tournament total of 23-13 to win the co-angler division by more than 3 pounds. For his efforts, Carrillo earned his very first bass boat, a Ranger Z117 with 90-hp outboard. READ MORE »

Hometown Hanselman

He told the weigh-in crowd that he was tired of being a bridesmaid. He’d had enough of finishing runner-up. He was ready for his time in the limelight and wanted it to happen on this stage, in Del Rio, Texas, in front of family and friends in the town where he grew up. READ MORE »

Hanselmania

Hanselmania

Watch out, fishing fans. There’s a Texas shootout brewing on Lake Amistad. Ray Hanselman of Del Rio, Texas, weighed what was at the time the heaviest limit of the tournament, a 19-pound, 6-ounce stringer, to take the lead in the first 15 minutes of weigh-in. READ MORE »

Brauer Sets the Pace

Brauer Sets the Pace

Denny Brauer used to spend his winters on Lake Amistad, but he and his wife loved the area so much that they moved here a few seasons ago. Now a local, Brauer says he’s spent enough time on Amistad to know that the bite can change overnight, and an angler can go from zero to hero in a hurry. Today, Brauer played the role of hero on his adopted home fishery by hauling in a 17-pound, 9-ounce limit on day one of the Rayovac FLW Series event on Lake Amistad presented by Frabill. He jumped into the early lead, largely thanks to a 9-pound, 7-ounce gorilla that took the day-one Big Bass honors. READ MORE »

Mighty Amistad Issues a Challenge

Mighty Amistad Issues a Challenge

Legendary south Texas reservoir Lake Amistad has hosted some of FLW’s most infamous smash-fests – the kind of tournaments where anglers weren’t challenged to catch fish, but were pushed to keep up with the competition when 20- and even 30-pound stringers were being hauled across the stage.
