Mother Nature is dominating the headlines on day one of the Rayovac FLW Series Texas Division event on Lake Amistad presented by Frabill. A steady rain has been falling most of the morning. It’s been accompanied by a brisk wind blowing at 15 mph from the northwest, bringing with it a piercing late-winter chill that has these Texans bundled up tight from head to toe. The thermometer said 52 degrees at takeoff, but take it from someone who was out on the water: The “feels like” temperature is much, much lower.

One benefit of Amistad’s current low water level is that the wind isn’t able to build massive waves across vast open expanses of water. As a result, offshore positioning is still pretty easy. Most of the anglers that our on-the-water crew observed this morning were plying main-lake and creek-channel drop-offs and hydrilla beds, so being able to hold on a spot is one bright spot amid otherwise challenging weather conditions.

Most of the anglers the web crew spoke with did report having a keeper or two in the box. One pro, Trevor Rogge, was culling by 11:30. Bites are generally tough to come by, but with half a day yet to fish, expect to see a fair number of limits at weigh-in.

Tactics witnessed ran the gamut from cranking and ripping jigs on the aggressive side to drop-shotting and Carolina-rigging on the finesse side. A few pros are tossing umbrella rigs, and one was lobbing a jumbo swimbait.

Any technique could produce the type of big bite that could practically boost an angler all the way to the final day of competition in what is turning out to be a very tough tournament on Lake Amistad.

Tune in to FLW Live at 3:30 p.m. to watch all 112 pros and co-anglers weigh their catch.
