FLW Tour Open co-angler recap: Lake Okeechobee

FLW Tour Open co-angler recap: Lake Okeechobee

The FLW Tour opener on Lake Okeechobee was a tournament of ups and downs. I had been down in Florida since early January where I fished the Everstart Series as a boater and was fortunate enough to cash a check after a tough second day. I practiced all three days of official practice with FLW pros Craig Dowling and Trevor Fitzgerald, both of whom are very proficient at flipping. Not surprisingly, we spent most of our practice time looking for areas where the big jig could produce for them. Both pros had found some good stretches of Big O fish but during the tournament both areas were destroyed by the wind. READ MORE »

Breaking through on the Big O

Breaking through on the Big O

CLEWISTON, Fla. – In his brief time as a professional bass fisherman, Randall Tharp has achieved considerable success – numerous Triple-A wins, top-10 finishes and over a half million dollars in career earnings. But up until today, he’d never won the big one – falling just short last year at both Okeechobee and at the Forrest Wood Cup. This week he was able to accomplish two of his biggest goals simultaneously – winning a Walmart FLW Tour event and winning a major tournament on the Big O. READ MORE »

Tharp caught a five-bass limit weighing 23 pounds, 2 ounces Sunday to win $125,000 with a four-day catch of 20 bass weighing 101-12. The catch gave him the win by a massive 23-pound, 9-ounce margin over John Cox of Debary, Fla., who caught a total of 20 bass weighing 78-3 and earned $35,000. Tharp’s margin of victory broke the FLW Tour record set by National Guard pro Brett Hite (20-4, Lake Toho, 2008). READ MORE »

CLEWISTON, Fla. – Aymon Wilcox officially got the monkey off his back in 2011. After several near misses, Wilcox finally won the Walmart FLW Tour event held on Okeechobee, his home lake. In 2012, he repeated the feat under much different, much tougher circumstances. READ MORE »

CLEWISTON, Fla. – It appears not even a vicious Florida cold front can stop Randall Tharp. In relentless 25 to 30 mph winds, Tharp buckled down and caught a workmanlike 14-pound, 13-ounce bag to retain a sizeable lead in the Walmart FLW Tour season opener on Lake Okeechobee. READ MORE »

Tharp still leads at Lake Okeechobee

CLEWISTON, Fla. – Weather continued to play a factor for anglers on Lake Okeechobee on Saturday. A front blew through and brought with it cooler temperatures, cloudy skies and winds that howled with gusts up to 25 to 30 miles per hour. EverStart pro Randall Tharp of Gardendale, Ala., has endured the changing weather during the tournament and led the first two days of competition with sacks each day that weighed more than 30 pounds. He voiced concern Friday that he might have an “off” day where he would be unable to maintain that catch weight. READ MORE »

Tharp continues to lead Walmart FLW Tour on Lake Okeechobee presented by Evinrude

CLEWISTON, Fla. – The wind wasn’t a factor today like it was Thursday, but fishing pressure might have been as Lake Okeechobee seemed reluctant to give up large limits of bass at the Walmart FLW Tour on Lake Okeechobee presented by Evinrude. Six of the top-10 competitors after Friday’s weigh-in posted less weight than they did the day before. But the term “less weight” was relative for EverStart pro Randall Tharp of Gardendale, Ala., who caught a five-bass limit weighing 30 pounds, 4 ounces Friday to maintain his lead. READ MORE »

CLEWISTON, Fla. – Randall Tharp has six consecutive top-10 finishes on south Florida’s Lake Okeechobee, but no major wins. Although he considers Alabama home, it’s always been a dream of his to win a tour event on the Big O. And it appears that Tharp is halfway from turning that dream into a reality. READ MORE »

CLEWISTON, Fla. – The weights might not be as deep as last year, but the top of the leaderboard is still mighty impressive at Lake Okeechobee. Not just in numbers but in names. The two pros at the very top of that leaderboard are the same ones that finished first and second at the 2011 Walmart FLW Tour opener. READ MORE »

Up-and-down Okeechobee

Up-and-down Okeechobee

CLEWISTON, Fla. – For the past 12 months, the bass fishing on south Florida’s Lake Okeechobee has been out of this world. The 2011 Walmart FLW Tour season opener served as the official coming out party for the Big O and the good times just kept rolling. So when the 2012 FLW Tour schedule was announced, most assumed there would be a repeat of last year’s record-breaking slugfest. But this year, the stars haven’t quite aligned, meaning Okeechobee will likely come back to Earth. READ MORE »
