Lake Eufaula
Eufaula, Ala.
June 20, 2020 and June 21, 2020
How the fishery sets up
Straddling the Alabama-Georgia line, Eufaula has long been touted as the “Bass Fishing Capital of the World,” as nearly every inch of the Chattahoochee River impoundment’s 45,000 acres is full of bass habitat.
Lily pads, gator grass and hyacinth are the most abundant vegetation in the lake. There’s also hydrilla, though this year it isn’t as prevalent.
Off the bank, there are countless brush piles littered throughout the lake. And the lower end features numerous ledges where large schools of bass flock as the summer heat sets in.
While there are spotted bass to be caught in Eufaula, it is the largemouth population that receives the bulk of the attention.
What to expect
The upcoming BFL events will take place after the lake has received a lot of pressure from the Toyota Series and the Bassmaster Elite Series, but the lake should still fish well. Josh Stracner, who has three BFL wins on Eufaula since 2018, says a lot of things will be on the table.
“I think with all the pressure, the guys that can find small, out of the way places offshore that have three or four fish on them, that’s going to be the way to win,” says Stracner. “The bigger schools are getting smaller and smaller, and the community holes are getting beat up.”
Stracner says that the brush pile bite hasn’t been great lately, but it’s hard to rule out on Eufaula. He also thinks that a shallow bite could be good too, especially if the next few weeks feature heavy offshore action.
“I wouldn’t rule out someone catching them shallow,” says Stracner. “With everybody offshore, I think somebody could come in every day with a pretty good bag shallow.”
For weights, Stracner thinks that 20 pounds will be the mark to hit for a win. Though he admits that Eufaula can surprise with giant bags, he figures the drag of summer and angler pressure will put that super high end out of reach.
Baits and techniques
Eufaula can be fished with a lot of standard baits, so you don’t necessarily need to run out and buy something special.
“Shallow, I‘d be throwing a spinnerbait or a frog,” says Stracner. “As far as deep stuff, the traditional jig, worm, crankbait and swimbait will work. And, there could be a lot of finessing going on, especially a few weeks from now.”
