Sam Rayburn Midday Update – Day 1

Sam Rayburn Midday Update – Day 1
Nick LeBrun

In today’s morning story, James Biggs made several predictions for the first day of the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division event presented by Mercury on Sam Rayburn Reservoir. Based on what our media team saw this morning, Biggs’ predictions are basically spot on.

About two-thirds of the field was fishing up shallow around hay grass and flooded bushes, while the rest stuck to drops and ridges out on the main lake, which Biggs predicted perfectly.

The shallow bite, as predicted, was hot for keepers, but not producing many big bites for the anglers that the FLW media team talked to. From the Cassels-Boykin area to the dam, every shallow-water angler we talked to either had 12 to 14 pounds in the livewell or was working on a limit that would weigh within that range.

By far, the most successful pro we encountered on day one was Texan Kris Wilson, who landed his fourth fish about the time our chase boat pulled up. He said that fish put him at 17 pounds. Wilson soon filled his limit and culled, which should have bumped him over the 20-pound mark. That was at 7:30, so Wilson should be in real good shape by weigh-in this afternoon.

The biggest wild cards are what we didn't see this morning: the contingent of anglers that ran way up the Angelina River and the afternoon bite. Several anglers we spoke with, including FLW Tour pros Sheldon Collings and Nick LeBrun, each said the bite has been better in the middle part of the day and the afternoon.

There’s also a breeze beginning to build, which might help out any pros slinging swim jigs and other moving baits around the bushes.

One thing is for sure: There’ll be a lot of Rayburn bass brought to weigh-in, and the weights will probably be stacked very close throughout the field.

If you want to see how day one shakes out on Sam Rayburn, log on for the FLW Live weigh-in broadcast at 2 p.m. CT.

Nelson Wraps Champlain Practice

Nelson Wraps Champlain Practice

Ron Nelson is easily in the group of favorites in the event and a bonafide Northern expert, so I was eager to hop in the boat for a morning with the smallie snatcher. Champlain isn’t fishing quite like it was the years he won, but Nelson is still guaranteed to have a lot of eyes on him come day one. READ MORE »

Get to Know Lake Champlain

Lake Champlain is a giant of a lake. It stretches 100-plus miles from its beginning down south at Whitehall, N.Y., and runs all the way up to the Canadian border between the Green Mountains of Vermont and the Adirondacks in New York. Though the competitors aren’t allowed to venture into Canada, there is still plenty for anglers to break down for the final event of the 2019 FLW Tour season. READ MORE »

Sam Rayburn Midday Update – Day 3

Sam Rayburn Midday Update – Day 3

Kris Wilson did everything he could this morning to put away this tournament before anyone had a chance to make a run at him. The Montgomery, Texas, pro returned to the spot where he started the first two days and boxed up a pair of 5-pounders. The leader has camped on his spot basically all morning, and now we estimate he's culled up to about 18 pounds. Wilson came into today with a lead of more than 4 1/2 pounds over second-place pro Josh Bensema, and a much greater margin over everyone else, so that limit is huge and likely has him on course for a wire-to-wire victory in the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division event presented by Mercury on Sam Rayburn Reservoir. In terms of fish caught, tournament leader Kris Wilson had a tougher morning today than on day one. 2019 Lake Champlain Preview

2019 Lake Champlain Preview

Champlain is such a fun location for a tournament in large part because of the unpredictability involved. Nelson winning last year’s Costa FLW Series tilt with all smallmouths was something of a surprise, but given the conditions, it made plenty of sense. Exactly what will go down this year is legitimately up in the air. READ MORE »

On the flip side, Josh Bensema, who’s 4 pounds, 10 ounces behind Wilson, thinks he might have found the kind of Sam Rayburn motherlode that could earn him a come-from-behind victory. And while most of the rest of the top 10 are well behind Wilson, several of them hinted at being on the trail of some truly mammoth bags. READ MORE »
