Day one of the YETI FLW College Fishing National Championship on the Potomac River has been pretty good so far. The event, which is presented by Lowrance, pits 148 of the best college teams in the country against each other, and the winning team will represent all of College Fishing in the FLW Cup.
In a striking contrast from the muggy All-American held last week on the Potomac, day one of the National Championship has been crisp and somewhat cool – perfect shorts and hoodie weather. Still, with the sun beating down and the tide moving, the fish seem to be biting despite this mini cold front.
Though it’s admittedly very inaccurate, the FLW Live Leaderboard is at least a decent approximation of how things have shaken out so far. Already, we’ve got two bags over 15 pounds in the books, from the Murray State duo of Adam Puckett and Blake Albertson and the West Virginia team of Nolan Minor and Thomas Raines. Behind them, there are plenty of teams with 12 pounds, and it seems likely that between some missing updates and afternoon upgrades 15 pounds will happen for more than two or three teams.
As for the fishing, it seems like hard cover is going to play pretty strong again. Though we’ve seen plenty of fish caught in the grass flats and pads, some of the bigger ones have definitely come off wood and rock. We’ve also seen a lot of teams catching fish up the river, in contrast to the very centrally dominated All-American.
Weigh-in starts at 3 p.m. ET and is live online. If you want to see some Potomac bass, including at least a few 4-pounders, you may want to check it out.
