Top 10 Baits from Clear Lake
Kyle Grover

Even though cold, windy and rainy conditions challenged the field throughout the event, Clear Lake still showed the caliber of fish that swim in it during the second stop of the Costa FLW Series Western Division season, which was presented by Ranger Boats.

With fish to be had in all three stages of the spawn, it’s no surprise that the top pros leaned on everything from a topwater to a jig, and of course, a drop-shot.

Here’s a look at what the top pros used to catch their fish on Clear Lake.

Kyle Grover’s winning pattern

1.Tournament winner Kyle Grover caught his fish on two Phenix football jigs paired with either a Strike King Rage Bug on the 1/2-ounce size or a 3-inch Berkley Powerbait Chigger Craw on the 3/8-ounce model. He also caught a few keepers on a Norman DD22 in the chili bowl color.

2. Finishing second, Gary Collins tempted his fish with a 1/2-ounce jig with a Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver trailer and a Texas-rigged Strike King Rage Bug.

3. Joe Uribe Jr. got most of his work done with a drop-shot comprised of a Roboworm Straight Tail Worm (margarita mutilator color) with a 1/4-ounce Boss weight.

4. David Valdivia finished fourth thanks in large part to cranking a Strike King 6XD.

5. Andrew Loberg reports catching over 100 fish in three days on a 3/4-ounce Pepper Custom Baits jig with a Yamamoto Double Tail Grub and a crawfish colored Strike King 10XD.

6. Ryan German took a unique approach by fishing a 1/4-ounce Fish Head Spin with a 3.8 Keitech Swing Impact FAT swimbait in rainbow shad.

7. Lane Olson earned a seventh-place finish with a white River2Sea Bully Wa 2 Frog and a drop-shot rigged with a 7-inch Roboworm (margarita mutilator color).

8. A green gizzard shad Strike King Sexy Dawg was Bryant Smith’s top bait, but he also got bit on a 1/2-ounce swim jig with a Strike King Rage Swimmer trailer.

9. Travis Archer devoted most of his week to flipping a Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver, but he also worked a drop-shot into his program.

10. Fishing a drop-shot with a Roboworm in the margarita mutilator color earned Jim McLaughlin a tenth-place finish.

Top 10 Patterns from the National Championship

Though there was some carryover from the T-H Marine Bass Fishing League (BFL) All-American the week before, the fishing on the Potomac River was a lot better for the anglers in the YETI FLW College Fishing National Championship presented by Lowrance. With better fishing came more robust grass patterns, but plenty of bass (some of the biggest of the event) were caught off hard cover as well. All in all, it was a mixed week of very good fishing on the Potomac. READ MORE »
