Top 10 Baits from Table Rock

Top 10 Baits from Table Rock

It really didn’t matter what pros threw at Table Rock. The fish were probably going to eat it.

Yet, despite a banner practice, things certainly got tougher throughout the Costa FLW Series Central Division event, which was presented by Power-Pole. Thus, pros needed to continually adapt to the conditions with their offerings.

Here’s a look at the lures that helped the top 10 anglers.

Olliverson’s winning pattern

Complete results

1. Eric Olliverson spent every morning fishing for smallmouths offshore with a Keitech Swing Impact FAT 3.3 on a 6th Sense Divine Swimbait Jighead and a 6th Sense Crush Dogma 115 topwater bait in gizzard shad. Then he’d run shallow to flip up a kicker or two. On the final day, he figured out the bass would come out of the bushes to eat his topwater in the rainy conditions, allowing him to cover water and catch his winning weight. He threw the topwater on a 7-foot, 2-inch 6th Sense LUX rod with a Lew’s casting reel and 30-pound-test Vicious No-Fade Braid.

2. Dakota Ebare put a 7-foot, 6-inch Hammer Rods Elite Series flipping stick in his hands Thursday morning and never put it down for three days. His weapon on the end was a Strike King Rage Tail Rage Bug or Strike King Rage Tail Menace Grub (when he ran out of Rage Bugs) in Okeechobee craw behind a 1/2-ounce weight on 18-pound-test Sunline fluorocarbon line.

3. Todd Castledine did a little sight-fishing, but he instead focused more on offshore smallmouths, targeting them with a Strike King Rage Swimmer in ghost shad or an oyster-colored Strike King Sexy Dawg

4. Kyle Minke wished he hadn’t spent the first day fishing points with a Ned rig before chasing a few bedding fish, because once he scrapped that pattern on day two to run up the James River and flip laydowns, his weights improved dramatically. His prime flipping baits were a Bitter’s Bait Jitter Craw or Zoom Ultra-Vibe Speed Craw on a 3/0 VMC wide-gap hook and a 1/2-ounce WOO! Tungsten Weight.

5. A wacky-rigged Strike King KVD Perfect Plastic Ocho did plenty of work for Greg Bohannan up the White River, but his key trick was actually to rig the Ocho Texas style but weightless. He’d then skip it up into flooded brush and twitch and pop it out like a soft jerkbait to give the fish a different look. Bohannan also was ready with a Strike King Rage Tail Rage Bug.

6. Three points within a couple hundred yards of one another were magic for Matt Wood. On day one, he targeted bass that he saw busting shad by throwing a Strike King Sexy Dawg. His catch included a 6-11 giant. Yet, changing weather conditions caused the baitfish in the area to change up their activity, and his bite changed itht hem. Wood had to adapt and toss a pro blue red pearl-colored Keitech Swing Impact FAT 3.3 swimbait.

7. For two days, Jake Morris looked like he had the winning pattern. He was making an hour-long run up the James River to three pockets in the McCord Bend area. There, he was coaxing bites out of flooded cover with a Reaction Innovations Swamp Donkey, which had him leading the first two days. Unfortunately, his water cleared up the final day, killing his pattern.

8. Be it sight-fishing or simply pulling out and blind-casting areas where he would’ve liked to sight-fish if the weather was better, Wesley Rogers did all his damage on Bass Pro Shops Tender Tubes in green pumpkin or white with the tail died chartreuse. He threw both on a 1/4-ounce Jewel Rattlin’ Tube Head.

9. It was all about finesse for Greg Mansfield. Fishing points and pockets, he used a Ned rig, shaky head and a green pumpkin Neko-rigged Yamamoto Senko with a 1/16-ounce weight and a 1/0 Owner Cover Shot Worm Hook. He also mixed in shad-colored Senkos, which he wacky-rigged with a weighted hook.

10. Once Jason Bonds committed to sight-fishing, he never gave it up. A big key for him was downsizing to a Strike King KVD Perfect Plastic Baby Rodent in green pumpkin and California 420. He also carried a swimbait.

Vlog: Becker's 3 Patterns from Martin

Vlog: Becker's 3 Patterns from Martin

Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit pro Matt Becker recently shared a great video that details the three patterns he used to earn a fourth-place finish at the season’s third stop on Lake Martin. Becker, who’s currently second in the Angler of the Year race, caught both largemouth and spotted bass and capitalized on a variety of tactics for a top finish. His patterns included targeting staging and spawning spotted bass on shoals, skipping docks and sight-fishing for spawning largemouths.  READ MORE »

Top 10 Patterns from Lake Martin

Spotted bass dominated the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit on Lake Martin, but they didn’t win it. Sure, the sheer abundance of spotted bass in Martin left most pros’ thumbs bloody and raw from catching so many fish. Yet, it was the key largemouth that really separated the field, and what helped Jason Abram earn his first victory. READ MORE »

Top 10 Baits from Hartwell

Because of high water and cooler conditions, bass on Lake Hartwell haven’t quite gotten fully into the mood to spawn. MLF Bass Pro Tour pro Marty Robinson pulled off a wire-to-wire win, but the victory wasn’t easy. The final field of 10 contained a lot of local knowledge and experienced anglers who were ready to knock Robinson off should he falter. Here’s a look at how the rest of the top 10 caught their fish and earned their paychecks. READ MORE »

Top 10 Patterns from Lake Chickamauga

In February, with water temperatures in the high 40s, no one expected a fast and furious bite during the 2020 Toyota Series Central Division tournament on Lake Chickamauga. What everyone hoped for was quality fish. There were two 10-pound-plus bass brought to the weigh-in stand, but it appeared consistency was the name of the game, at least for the winner, Jim Neece Jr. of Bristol, Tenn.  READ MORE »

Top 10 Patterns from the Harris Chain

In past FLW events on the chain, the grass was best in Griffin and Harris, but this time Dora, Beauclair, Eustis and Harris provided most of the top bags. Targeting hydrilla, eelgrass and hard spots, prespawn and postspawn fish were the focus for the vast majority of the top schools. READ MORE »

Top 10 Baits from Lake Chickamauga

It was February, so low temperatures were the norm for the 2020 Toyota Series Central Division tournament on Lake Chickamauga. Water temperatures were in the high 40s, which meant the bass were generally not overly aggressive or active. Not all, but most fish were taken in shallow water where the bass were moving up to feed and/or take advantage of warmer, shallower water. READ MORE »

Top 10 Baits from the Harris Chain

Top 10 Baits from the Harris Chain

Between cold fronts and pressure, the Harris Chain has been a tough nut to crack, yet the top teams in the Abu Garcia College Fishing presented by YETI National Championship presented by Lowrance got it done with a combination of plastic and hard baits. Certainly, the teams learned a thing or two from the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit event held the week prior on the chain, but you still can never go wrong with a Texas-rigged worm, vibrating jig or lipless crankbait in Florida. At Florida’s Harris Chain, in late winter, it’s a good bet the same handful of baits are going to produce more than any others, from Lake Harris down to Apopka. Top 10 Patterns from the St. Johns

The Toyota Series Southern Division opener on the St. Johns River potentially missed some stellar fishing opportunities. Despite being the time of year when big green fish start to move up to the banks en masse to spawn, changing weather conditions and multiple cold fronts kept fish coming and going all week, opening small windows on which pros and co-anglers needed to capitalize. Top 10 Baits from the St. Johns

The St. Johns River was in a bit of a funk for the Toyota Series Southern Division opener. Instead of a full-on spawning slugfest, a couple cold fronts and quickly changing wind and water conditions kept fish moving in and out. The anglers chasing them had to stay on their toes. Plenty of pros did find quality fish, though, and they did so with a lot of familiar baits when it comes to late-winter fishing in Florida. Right now, it’s all about the black and blue plastics on the St. Johns. READ MORE »
