Top 10 Baits from Cherokee Lake

Top 10 Baits from Cherokee Lake
Grae Buck

Stop No. 5 of the 2019 FLW Tour on Cherokee Lake, presented by Lowrance, was more or less an all-out smallmouth slugfest, and as such, the top 10 dominated primarily with finesse tactics and many of the same go-to smallie baits.

A couple pros spent some (or lots) of their time targeting green fish, but it was the brown variety that got the job done in the end.

Here’s a look at what the top 10 threw at Cherokee’s tremendous bass population.

Upshaw’s winning pattern

Complete results

Andrew Upshaw

1. Andrew Upshaw wacky-rigged a 4-inch Strike King KVD Perfect Plastics Ocho in green pumpkin to catch most of his fish behind boulders that held spawning smallmouths, and he used a 3 1/4-inch Strike King Rage Swimmer for the day-four kickers that he pulled off a rock pile not far from the takeoff ramp.

Grae Buck

2. Grae Buck caught most of his fish on a shaky head equipped with a Cornerstone Baits Finny Worm that he chopped down to about 4 inches. He also caught some fish on a 1/13-ounce Hayabusa Brush Easy jighead with a Z-Man TRD

Dylan Hays

3. Dylan Hays’ bait of choice for Cherokee largemouths was a homemade 1/2-ounce flipping jig with a Zoom Z Craw Jr. trailer the first three days and a Zoom Big Salty Chunk on day four. He also weighed in two fish on a Phancy Lures tandem-blade white and chartreuse spinnerbait with a white Zoom Split Tail trailer.

Jason Reyes

4. Jason Reyes mainly relied on a Z-Man Finesse ShroomZ Ned rig head with a green pumpkin Z-Man TRD to catch his fish. He rigged that on a G. Loomis 822 spinning rod and a Shimano Stella reel spooled with 6-pound-test Seaguar Tatsu fluorocarbon. He also tossed around a 3.3-inch Keitech Swing Impact FAT.

Andy Young

5. Andy Young used a 3/32-ounce Outkast Tackle Perfect Ned Head with a 2/0 hook most of the week. He tipped that with a Z-Man TRD, which he threw on a G. Loomis E6X 7-foot, 5-inch, medium-power, extra-fast-action rod and a 4000-size Shimano Stradic Ci4+ spinning reel spooled with 20-pound-test Sunline PEx8 braid and a 10-pound-test Sunline Shooter leader. Young caught his day-four kicker on a 4.2-inch Keitech Swing Impact FAT on an Outkast Tackle Golden Eye Swimmer head and also used a shaky head with a 4-inch Zoom Finesse Worm

Tom Monsoor

6. Tom Monsoor’s homemade swim jig did all the heavy lifting at Cherokee. He opted for a white jig with a 3 1/2-inch Yamamoto Swimming Senko (also white).

Tim Cales

7. Tim Cales used a Yamamoto Kut Tail Worm on a shaky head to target smallmouths and a Megabass Magdraft swimbait to go after largemouths.

Derrick Snavely

8. Derrick Snavely utilized a V&M shaky head with a V&M Pork Pin worm (which he also used on his drop-shot setup) and a V&M J-Mag worm to get after his smallmouths. When he needed a big largemouth bite, Snavely used an Evergreen JT topwater and a 1/2-ounce V&M Cliff Pace The Adrenaline Pacemaker flipping jig.

Matt Becker

9. Matt Becker used a BassCave Custom Tackle Dead Head for his Ned rig, which he tipped with a Z-Man TRD in green pumpkin, but his best tactic was tossing around a Perfection Lures Sure Hook-Up shaky head with a green pumpkin Googan Baits Slim Shake (with a bit cut off).

Tim Frederick

10. Tim Frederick used a Z-Man Finesse ShroomZ Ned rig head with four different colors of the Z-Man TRD and Z-Man TRD MinnowZ to do most of his damage. He also mixed in a stand-up head tipped with a Strike King Rodent

Top 10 Patterns from Lake Cumberland

Top 10 Patterns from Lake Cumberland

Smallmouths dominated at the 2019 Costa FLW Series Championship on Lake Cumberland. Oklahoma’s Andrew Upshaw led the way with brown bass caught on a jig and a Ned rig on bluff bank transitions in the reservoir’s lower end. Behind him, only a couple of pros hedged their bets on targeting largemouths. The rest fished for smallies and considered green bass to be bonus fish and spotted bass to be limit fillers on the tough days. READ MORE »

Lake Cumberland Top 10 Baits

In classic Southern smallmouth fashion, crankbaits and jigs dominated the top 10 at Lake Cumberland during the 2019 Costa FLW Series Championship. The only exceptions were a few finesse baits and the tackle used by two pros who targeted largemouths. Here’s what worked. READ MORE »

Top 10 Patterns from Grand Lake

Curt Warren knew what he wanted to do, and it had nothing to do with weeding through a bunch of small fish up shallow. Rather, he focused his attention on deeper Grand Lake spots with chunk rock and brush and amassed a three-day total of 46 pounds, 7 ounces to win the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division finale, presented by T-H Marine. Here’s how the rest of the top 10 caught their fish and earned their checks on Grand. READ MORE »

When to Fish the Flashy Swimmer

When to Fish the Flashy Swimmer

In April, FLW Associate Editor Justin Onslow documented how Gross likes to cut the belly of his two favorite hollow swimbaits – the Scottsboro and the Zoom Swimmer – when rigging on a weedless hook to achieve a high hook-up ratio. However, that article didn’t break down where and why Gross prefers to use the Beast Flashy Swimmer hook versus a standard weighted, weedless swimbait hook. So we reached out to Gross for more info. READ MORE »

Bryan Schmitt’s ChatterBait Box

Bryan Schmitt’s ChatterBait Box

“I’m pretty wild on color selection,” says Schmitt. “I always have my shad colors. I always have my black and blues. But I fall in love with trying to find a niche color. Especially when you get into the fall of the year on the Potomac. I love to find a crayfish pattern, and I feel like then a crayfish-imitating ChatterBait out-fishes anything else. And I also like to find a bluegill pattern at times, so I play with the colors.” READ MORE »

How to Make a Swimbait a Line-Thru

Jake Lawrence thinks the line-thru swimbait is more versatile than many tournament anglers realize. The Kentucky Lake and Pickwick guide and 2018 Costa FLW Series Lake Barkley champion frequently chucks one any time bass are shallow to not only put big fish in the boat, but to catch five good ones in a day. How to Finesse Weed line Largemouths

How to Finesse Weed line Largemouths

When it comes to finesse baits that put fish in the boat, the Ned rig has certainly earned a spot as a go-to for bass anglers across the country. While it catches pretty much everything that swims, most of the attention gets put on catching northern smallmouths or Ozarks-region largemouths and spotted bass with it.   READ MORE »

Top 10 Patterns from the Potomac River

The Costa FLW Series Northern Division presented by Gajo Baits event on the Potomac River was not the slugfest the season opener on Champlain was or the season finale on the St. Lawrence River is almost sure to be. As has been the case in many of the FLW events on the Potomac this year, the fishing was pretty stingy, and hard cover played an outsized role. READ MORE »
