Top 10 Baits from Kentucky Lake

Top 10 Baits from Kentucky Lake
Carter McNeil, Cole Floyd

Crankbaits were the deal on Kentucky Lake during the 2019 YETI FLW College Fishing Open. Springtime on the Tennessee River impoundment usually means traditional prespawn tactics, and we saw a bunch of that during the tournament. Anglers in the top 10 relied heavily on lipless and diving crankbaits, as well as some Alabama rigs, jigs and jerkbaits.

Here are the details.

McCarty's and Sloan's winning story

Top 10 patterns

Complete results

1. Hunter McCarty and Sloan Pennington of the University of North Alabama only used a few baits to get the job done: a red 1/2-ounce Jackall TN 60 lipless crankbait and a Rapala DT6 in the demon color. They also caught one fish on a custom 3/4-ounce double-Colorado blade (with one orange blade) spinnerbait and a Kalin’s Lunker Grub trailer.

2. Dakota Pierce and Tristan McCormick of Bethel University caught most of their day-one fish on YUM YUMbrella Flash Mob Jr. umbrella rigs with 3.8-inch Keitech Swing Impact FAT swimbaits. On day two, they made the switch to a black and blue Queen Tackle jig and a 1/2-ounce Strike King Red Eye Shad to do most of their damage.

3. Ty Cox and Chandler Boman of Blue Mountain College only used one bait all tournament long. They targeted their shallow flat with a 1/2-ounce royal red Strike King Red Eye Shad.

4. Nathan Doty and Jacob Louis of McKendree University did all their damage cranking. They employed a SPRO Little John 50 crankbait in a red craw color, but they caught most of their fish with a 1/2-ounce BOOYAH One Knocker lipless crankbait in the Rayburn red color.

5. Alex Henderson and Zach Manneback of Adrian College spent all their time cranking and caught most of their fish on a No. 8 Rapala Shad Rap in Ike’s demon and crawdad colors. They stuck with those colors with Rapala DT6 and SPRO Little John MD crankbaits as well, though they didn’t catch as many fish on those baits.

6. Youngstown State's Jonathan Creed and Jared Latone narrowed down their bait selection to just a few and “cycled through them” throughout the event. They relied primarily on a Megabass Ito Vision 110 jerkbait in the Wakasagi color, an Omega Custom Tackle Rapture vibrating jig and a SPRO Little John MD  crankbait in spring craw.

7. Zachary Graham and Cody Batterson of Adrian relied on a trio of baits to land their 37-14 for the event: a Rapala DT10, a white and chartreuse Terminator Super Stainless spinnerbait without a trailer and an Alabama rig equipped with either Keitech Swing Impact FATs or Bass Pro Shops Speed Shad swimbaits.

8. Bethel's John Coble Garrett and Kyle Palmer caught about half their fish on a Strike King HC 2.5 square-bill crankbait in either sexy shad or citrus shad and the other half on a 3/4-ounce Strike King Red Eye Shad in the sexy shad color.

9. Cole Floyd and Carter McNeil of Bethel caught most of their fish during the event on a Strike King Red Eye Shad in the chartreuse belly craw color. They also used a white 3/4-ounce Z-Man/Evergreen ChatterBait Jack Hammer with a Lake Fork Live Magic Shad trailer.

10. Trevor McKinney and Blake Jackson of McKendree relied primarily on two baits throughout the event: a SPRO RkCrawler 55 in spring craw and 3/4-ounce lipless crankbaits.

Kelley Grabs Lead with 43 Pounds

Kelley Grabs Lead with 43 Pounds

Down near Ogdensburg, N.Y. – roughly 45 miles from takeoff – was the area on day one of the Costa FLW Series Northern Division finale presented by Gajo Baits, as the majority of the top bags came from there. A day later, it was the anglers who ran 75 miles or more down to Clayton, N.Y., and beyond who scored big, while the Ogdensburg bunch either capitalized in small windows or not at all. READ MORE »

St. Lawrence Midday Update – Day 2

With slightly warmer weather and similar sun and wind conditions, day two of the Costa FLW Series Northern Division presented by Gajo Baits on the St. Lawrence River should’ve presented optimal conditions for smallmouth. Hatch Leads by 1 Ounce

Hatch Leads by 1 Ounce

There were no 25-pound mega-bags coming across the stage at weigh-in of the final leg of the Costa FLW Series Northern Division. The event on the St. Lawrence River, presented by Gajo Baits, hasn’t been the slugfest many expected after one day of fishing. There were still plenty of 20-pound bags, though, and the St. Lawrence on a bad day is still a tremendous fishery. READ MORE »

St. Lawrence Midday Update – Day 1

St. Lawrence Midday Update – Day 1

The final leg of the Costa FLW Series Northern Division presented by Gajo Baits on the St. Lawrence River opened to perfect conditions for anyone looking to burn some gas. Yes, it was a crisp 40 degrees at takeoff, but it was clear and calm. In fact, the current is ripping so hard it’s keeping the river as flat as most anglers have ever seen. Most pros should’ve been able to run all 95 miles to Lake Ontario (and into the lake if they wanted to) with little trouble. READ MORE »

To Run or Not to Run

To Run or Not to Run

The final leg of the Costa FLW Series Northern Division on the St. Lawrence River, presented by Gajo Baits, is primed to be a smallmouth smashfest, as usual. That said, this year’s event, which is presented by Realtree Fishing, will launch out of Massena, N.Y., instead of the usual Clayton. So, what was once a 15-or-so-mile run to the mouth of the lake from takeoff – and roughly 30-plus miles to Gallo Island or Main Duck – will now be about a 95-mile run just to get to the lake. Fishing just her second full season as a co-angler in the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) South Carolina Division, mother of two and first-grade teacher Kate Hough was planning and preparing for a chance to do something no woman has ever done in her division: win Co-Angler of the Year. Review: STIX Fishing Rods

STIX Fishing is a relatively new company started by FLW Live host Travis Moran and Nick Smith that sells fishing rods with a bit of a unique plan. Instead of picking and choosing a rod or two at a time, STIX wants to sell you six rods at a time (the STIX PAX) for $500, which comes out to about $83 per rod. According to the company, the STIX PAX is a complete set of bass rods and will do everything you need rods to do. READ MORE »

Top 10 Patterns from the Potomac River

The Costa FLW Series Northern Division presented by Gajo Baits event on the Potomac River was not the slugfest the season opener on Champlain was or the season finale on the St. Lawrence River is almost sure to be. As has been the case in many of the FLW events on the Potomac this year, the fishing was pretty stingy, and hard cover played an outsized role. READ MORE »

Slow Down in Brush for More Success

Slow Down in Brush for More Success

Many times, hitting as many brush piles as possible is the key to success, with Bryan Thrift’s 2015 FLW Tour win on Lake Eufaula serving as a prime example of that strategy. However, with the fishing pretty tough on Lake Hamilton, both Wade Strelic and Joel Willert turned to more methodical approaches to generate bites. READ MORE »
