Amistad Midday Update – Day 2

Ray Hanselman

After weathering a canceled day one, the pros and co-anglers had a beautiful day to get things underway in the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division. Starting out on Lake Amistad for a tournament presented by Ranger Boats, the weather was cool at takeoff, but sunny and rapidly warming.

Morning story

Complete details

Prespawn staging is probably just around the corner, but for now the big and small fish in Amistad are still in their winter patterns — holding on main lake points and structure, lounging in the low grass lining the mouths of creeks and pockets and filling their bellies.

Most of the anglers we saw were following this format; essentially, seeking to intercept the fish that were nosing their way toward prespawn staging areas. Anglers were catching fish on a selection of reaction baits and slower presentations, with crankbaits, Alabama rigs, Carolina rigs and drop-shot rigs doing most of the work.

Ray Hanselman stepped on the gas early, with a solid limit by 8:30 a.m. CT. The Del Rio pro, who swept the division in 2015, patiently picked off several quality fish by working reaction baits over the grass at the mouth of a prominent creek. We checked on him later in the morning and it appeared that his early flurry accounted for most of his weight.

Fishing near Hanselman, Randy Dixon landed several good fish early as well. Joe Beebee was also on the board nicely with a 5-pounder when we found him.

Elsewhere, some were probing farther back into pockets and drains in hopes of finding some early prespawn movement. Most were cranking emergent wood and rocky banks and probing likely structure with drop-shot rigs, but none seemed to be producing like the winter patterns.

Because of the nature of the offshore fishing now, it seems as though co-anglers have plenty of opportunity. Several co-anglers showed off big catches, including Shane Ehrlich’s 5-pounder, a 7-pounder for Jared West and a solid limit for William Barrick.

Today’s show-stopper was an estimated 9-pounder that positioned Jay Childs well to potentially lead the co-angler division. That fish was his first of the day, his first of 2019 and his first on an Alabama rig.

The biggest fish we saw today was an estimated 10-pound carp, which legitimately ate Bronk McDaniel’s drop-shot worm. No kidding, the fish was hooked in the mouth.

On Saturday, the full field competes again, with the winner determined by the heaviest two-day catch. Weigh-in starts live online or in-person at 3:30 p.m. CT.

Bolton Hangs On

With a 17-pound, 6-ounce bag on day four of the FLW Tour opener on Sam Rayburn, which was presented by Polaris, the 24-year Tour veteran did something he’s been within ounces of doing so many times before: He won. He won his first Tour event, and he did it despite a handful of tremendous anglers — including standout rookie Nick LeBrun and the best angler on the planet, Bryan Thrift — breathing down his neck in a furious effort to outpace the Benton, Ky., pro. Bolton Busts 33-9 on Big Sam

Terry “Blade” Bolton can catch ‘em, of that there’s no doubt, and recently he’s threatened for his first FLW Tour win, but he may have his best shot yet in the FLW Tour opener presented by Polaris on Sam Rayburn. After weighing a whopping 33 pounds, 9 ounces on day two, Bolton took the lead with a 54-3 total. In second, Nick LeBrun followed up his 29-pound day one with 19-2 for a 48-4 total – just shy of 6 pounds behind Bolton. READ MORE »

Hanselmania Wins Again at Amistad

Ray “Hanselmania” Hanselman won the 2019 Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division event presented by Ranger Boats on Lake Amistad today with a two-day total of 38 pounds. The tournament was shortened to two days after day one was cancelled due to severe weather. Hanselman opened the tournament Friday with a 25-pound, 15-ounce catch that put him 9-7 ahead of second place. He could’ve stayed home today and still won the tournament, but the local angler added 12-1 to finish the blowout win. Second-place finisher Tyson Patrick’s two-day total only equaled what Hanselman caught on day one. READ MORE »

Amistad Midday Update - Day 3

Lake Amistad was in a stingy mood for the final day of Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division action, as evidenced by a lot of long-faced anglers with lots of vacancy in their livewells. A slightly warmer day began with flat, calm conditions, but a light breeze was gaining some consistency by early afternoon. It’s possible that the growing ripples may break up the surface enough to stimulate a few fish into chasing reaction baits. READ MORE »

Lake Amistad might not kick out quite as many massive stringers of largemouth bass as it used to, but the legendary south Texas border reservoir is still a factory for big fish.
