Top 10 Baits from Fort Gibson
What the pros used in a brutally tough derby
The final Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division event of the year was a true grinder. In fact, both first and second place only landed 13 keepers all week on Fort Gibson. When it’s that tough, little differences between baits can sometimes make a big difference. Below is what the top 10 threw to get it done.
1. Tommy Dickerson needed just one lure to fish the back end of a creek where he spent all three days of the tournament: ½-ounce Santone Pretender Spinnerbait with the front blade red and the back blade gold.
2. Kyle Cortiana’s two key lures for fooling marina bass were a 5/16-ounce Bionic Jig (peanut butter and jelly) teamed with a Gene Larew Hammer Craw and a Gene Larew Tattletail Worm (junebug) on a 3/16-ounce shaky head on 8-pound test.
3. Brady Winans preferred two 6th Sense crankbaits: a Crush 50X and Movement 80X for his Fort Gibson work. He also mixed in a Big Bite Baits Tour Toad Buzzbait in the morning for a couple of key bites.
4. Cody Bird fished the back end of creeks for three days using mostly a 6th Sense Crush 50X squarebill in chartreuse and black.
5. It’s no secret what Tommy Biffle’s favorite lure is these days: his own Gene Larew Biffle Hardhead teamed with a Gene Larew Biffle Bug in Sooner Run color. Biffle also used a Yamamoto Senko.
6. Mitchell Webb danced with just one lure all week: a Strike King Rage Bug (black neon and black blue flake) with a 3/8-ounce weight.
7. Brandon Mosley had to go to a Texas-rigged Zoom Brush Hog (watermelon candy) and a Missile Baits Tomahawk Worm (plum) to keep from getting hung up in rocky crevices of Fort Gibson.
8. Ryan Wilbanks primary lure for his rock work was a Missile Baits D Bomb (wicked craw and copper chopper) threaded onto a ¼-ounce YUM Pumpkin Head jighead.
9. Joel Baker mixed and matched a Berkley PowerBait Power Worm (blue fleck), Yamamoto Senko, a Biffle Bug (Sooner Run) on a 1/2-ounce Strike King Structure Head and a Zoom Trick Worm (green pumpkin) on a Missile Baits Warlock Shakey Head.
10. Darrel Robertson scored a top 10 using a Yamamoto Senko wacky-rigged on a 1/8-ounce jighead.
