First Top 10 is a Win for Burke

Johnny Burke

For three years, Johnny Burke, a 63-year-old retired county commissioner from Creek County, Oklahoma, has been fishing the Costa FLW Series as a co-angler just hoping he might score a top 10.

Today, Burke not only scored his first top-10 finish, but he took it all the way to the top spot for the win.

“This is really special,” he says. “I’ve been fishing these for several years just trying to make a top 10, and today I ended up winning it.”

Over the week, Burke fished with pros Holt Markum, Brandon Mosley and Tommy Dickerson. His biggest day happened on day two when Burke caught three bass weighing 9 pounds, 6 ounces while fishing with Mosley. With that, Burke took a 5-pound, 7-ounce lead into the final day.

Today, he caught just one bass while fishing with Dickerson, but he did not even need it to claim his $5,000 cash winnings as well as a new Ranger Z175 with 90-hp motor. His three-day total of 17 pounds, 2 ounces dominated the co-angler division. He won by 6-2.

All week Burke relied on a one-two combination of a Carolina-rigged Zoom Speed Craw (green pumpkin magic) and a Texas-rigged Zoom Baby Brush Hog (green pumpkin). He dyed the tips of both baits chartreuse.

“If I drew a pro fishing out on the main lake on points, I threw the Carolina-rigged Speed Craw,” Burke says. “If I drew a guy fishing back in creeks in close quarters, I pitched the Brush Hog. Both rigs helped me win this week.

“I always try to do something different from the pro,” he adds. “If he is throwing moving baits, I go to soft plastics and vice versa.”

Walters Punches for Guntersville Win

Kyle Walters of Grant Valkaria, Fla., won the 2018 Costa FLW Series Championship on Lake Guntersville with a two-day total weight of 44 pounds, 3 ounces. Walters punched grass mats for two days, utilizing the same approach in the same area as when he won the 2013 T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League Regional on Guntersville. The champ dropped 24-4 – the biggest limit of the event – on the scale today to hold off a charge by Bryan Thrift. READ MORE »

Jocumsen Glides to Guntersville Lead

For the last four or five years, FLW pro Carl Jocumsen has been tinkering and testing, experimenting and dialing in ways to incorporate glide baits into his tournament arsenal. He’s been trying to figure out how it can shift gears from being a big-bass bait to a tournament tool. Apparently, he’s getting really close to nailing down those details. Today, Jocumsen used a glide bait to pound out a 20-pound, 2-ounce limit at Lake Guntersville to establish the lead at the 2018 Costa FLW Series Championship. “It’s one of those days you’ll never forget,” he says. “I hope I can back it up tomorrow.” READ MORE »

WAGONER, Okla. (Oct. 6, 2018) – Pro Tommy Dickerson of Orange, Texas, brought three bass weighing 5 pounds, 13 ounces, to the scale Saturday to win the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division finale on Fort Gibson Lake presented by Mercury. Dickerson’s three-day total of 13 bass weighing 32 pounds, 6 ounces, was enough to earn him the top prize of $80,503, including a brand new Ranger Z518C boat with a 200-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard. Dickerson Wins by Tiebreaker

For the second time this season in the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division, a tournament was settled by tiebreaker after the top two pros finished the tournament with identical three-day weights. Tommy Dickerson of Orange, Texas, came into the final day at Fort Gibson in first place. Kyle Cortiana of Coweta, Okla., started the day in fourth. The two anglers finished the tournament with 32 pounds, 6 ounces. Because Dickerson was higher in the standings after day two, he was declared the champion. Fort Gibson Midday Update – Day 3

Things got a little crazy in the final-day action of the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division event presented by Mercury on Fort Gibson. First, falling water levels overnight threw a major curveball to tournament leader Tommy Dickerson and third-place angler Cody Bird. For the last two days both pros have been shimmying their way through a rocky shoal far up a feeder creek. Yesterday, both said if the water dropped just 3 or 4 inches, the small crevice they’ve been following through the shoal would dry up and they would be denied access. When they awoke and checked water levels this morning, indeed the water had dropped. READ MORE »

Fort Gibson Top 5 Patterns – Day 2

Getting off the beaten path. Finding something off the wall. Thinking outside the box. Trying something unconventional. These have all been the common themes of the top pros facing a very obstinate Fort Gibson Lake this week for the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division event presented by Mercury. To give some idea of just how stubborn Fort Gibson has been, only three pros have caught a limit both days of the tournament. Even more stunning is that the top-10 cut weight after two days among pros stands at just 18 pounds, 2 ounces. READ MORE »

Dickerson Takes Over at Fort Gibson

Consistently good performances for two days at Fort Gibson have Tommy Dickerson of Orange, Texas, in the lead going into the final day at the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division finale presented by Mercury. Dickerson, along with at least two others in the top 10, is grinding his way into a skinny backwater area to access a population of quality Fort Gibson bass. His efforts have paid off with limits of 14 pounds, 7 ounces and 12 pounds for a two-day total of 26-7. He leads local pro Ryan Wilbanks by 3-1. READ MORE »

Fort Gibson Midday Update – Day 2

Day two of the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division event presented by Mercury on Fort Gibson dawned much sunnier and breezier this morning. Anglers had high hopes that the wind might help improve the bite a smidge, but it’s remained tough. Top 5 Patterns from Fort Gibson – Day 1

When looking out across Fort Gibson Lake on day one of the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division event presented by Mercury, one word came to mind: stagnant. For the last couple of weeks, the late-summer doldrums have set in across northeastern Oklahoma with warm, humid conditions. Current is virtually nonexistent in the lake. Aside from a couple of showers this morning and a little afternoon breeze, the lake was calm for much of the day. In all, things were pretty stale. During the day, anglers struggled to crack the stagnant code. Local pros leaned heavily on their home field knowledge, pulling out all the stops by fishing brush piles, obscure rock formations and anywhere there might be a breath of current. Local pro Kyle Cortiana compounded his home court edge into the tournament lead with 15 pounds, 8 ounces. Behind him, 11- and 12-pound limits were enough to earn a top-five spot on day one. Fort Gibson Midday Update – Day 1

Fort Gibson is testing the pros and co-anglers alike on day one of the Costa FLW Series Southwestern event presented by Mercury. Morning reports indicate very, very few fish being caught. Lots of pros were sitting on zero or with just one fish by the noon hour. The biggest catch discovered belonged to local angler Ryan Wilbanks who had boated four keepers with at least one of them being sizable. READ MORE »

Question Marks Abound at Fort Gibson

Fort Gibson Lake has the quality and quantity of fish to churn out massive bags nearly all year long, but finding those fish might be harder now than it’s been all year. That’s not great news for anglers ahead of the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division tournament on Oct. 4. READ MORE »

Despite a slow day that yielded only 12 pounds, 13 ounces, Gregory Troughton of Discovery Bay, Calif., held on to his day-two lead and won the Costa FLW Series Western Division tournament presented by Power-Pole on the California Delta with a three-day total of 60-2. Days one and two saw Troughton catch all of his fish on a heavy punch rig. Day three brought challenging post-frontal conditions, and he had to vary his presentations. A popper and a ChatterBait added key fish today. READ MORE »
