Talk about saving the best for last. Jacob Traba sacked up a limit of 17 pounds, 6 ounces — the tournament’s heaviest co-angler bag — to win his division at the Costa FLW Series Western Division tournament presented by Power-Pole on the California Delta. Traba’s three-day total was 40-2.

Traba, from Pacifica, Calif., placed 56th on day one with 7-7, but he roared back on day two with a limit that weighted 15-5 and earned him a final-round berth in seventh place. His day-three weight was buoyed by an early kicker fish.

“I caught two small fish early, and then I flipped out the drop-shot again and caught a 6 1/2-pounder about 8 o’clock,” Traba says. “I was ready to go in at that point.”

Traba caught most of his fish on a drop-shot rigged with a 4/0 Roboworm Rebarb hook and a 7-inch Roboworm in the margarita mutilator color. Late in the day, a key bait change delivered the bites that locked up the win for him.

“In the last 45 minutes, we pulled into a new spot and started seeing big fish everywhere,” Traba says. “My pro told me a wacky-rigged Senko kills ’em when you can see ’em. He started throwing that bait and caught a 4-pounder.

“I immediately threw out a wacky-rigged Roboworm on 8-pound line, hooked a 6- to 7-pounder and broke it off. I was kind of devastated at that point, so I switched back over to my heavier line, put on a wacky-rigged Senko and caught a 3-pounder and a 3 1/2-pounder in the last 20 minutes.”
