As expected, today’s changing weather has shuffled the deck for anglers fishing the Costa FLW Series Western Division tournament on the California Delta. After the mostly calm and hot conditions of day one, the second round began about 14 degrees cooler with gusty winds of 15 mph.

The temperature drop, while numerically significant, was hardly brutal, as the morning lows fell only into the mid- to upper 50s. Daytime highs quickly rose into the mid-70s.

The biggest impacts likely came from the wind and the high, bright skies. The latter typically pushes fish deeper into cover and pins them tighter to shadowy structure such as laydowns, pilings and bridges. The former probably repositioned some fish and stimulated feeding on those windward banks. More importantly, big winds limited where anglers could run and how fast they could travel.

Some probably saw the increased wind as an opportunity to pursue reaction bites. Others may have decided to capitalize on the flipping bite once the higher sun angles pushed fish deeper into cover.

We followed day-one leader Jerred Jennings at takeoff and watched him meticulously pick his way through tules, hyacinth mats and other vegetation until mid-morning. He had only one keeper around 9:30, but he’ll likely find the juice later in the day.

Nick Nourot, fourth on day one, had a huge start, with approximately 17 pounds by mid-morning. He was flipping a large stretch of vegetation that held lots of forage.

Elsewhere, Ken Mah started the day in fifth place, but he could be working his way toward a nice bag. When we found him late morning, Mah had a lone keeper in the boat. Then, in the space of 20 minutes, he caught a 4-pounder and a 5. Look for Mah to hold steady or gain a notch or two.

Weigh-in begins at 3 p.m. PT. You can watch it on FLW Live.
