1000 Islands Midday Update – Day 2

1000 Islands Midday Update – Day 2
Joey Ford

Day two of the Costa FLW Series Northern Division event on the 1000 Islands, presented by Navionics, got off to a much more pleasurable start compared to yesterday in terms of both weather and fishing. While the wind is still blowing out of the north, it is much lighter today. That’s especially evident in Lake Ontario, where anglers can move around much more freely than they could on day one.

Chris Johnston was found early and quickly worked his way up to a 21-pound limit. Nearby, Austin Felix was doing work with nearly 25 pounds in the box and is making a strong case to lock up his first Angler of the Year title. Last year’s champ Matt Becker was also getting in on the action with a limit worth 23 pounds and thinks he has a 7-pounder to anchor it.

Also in the lake, Dylan Hays had a few fish, Dylan Fulk had one good one and Ron Nelson reported around 18 pounds.

On the river side, despite knowing where Kyle Hall was starting his day, he was nowhere to be found. It either means he cracked them quick, or had to scramble to a backup plan.

Joey Ford had one dink and a 4-pounder when we got up with him around 9 o’clock and he quickly added another one close to 4 pounds. He was fishing some deeper stuff near the lake, but with the sun beating down and light wind he packed up and ran shallow. He caught a 6-pounder shallow yesterday and she wasn’t alone, so odds are good he’ll be able to fill out his limit in the skinny water.

As the day has worn on the sun continues to beam down and the wind is letting up. The afternoon bite was strong yesterday and you can bet it’ll be the same story today. You can almost guarantee some mixing up of the leaderboard today. Check out the live weigh-in at 2:30 p.m. ET to see what goes down.

For professional anglers, the holiday is even more special because it lands during that small portion of the year when they’re not on the road and can spend a little extra time relaxing at home.
