Top 10 Baits from Ouachita

Justin Atkins

The fishing may be brutally tough on Lake Ouachita in August, but it’s pretty easy to figure out what works best.

All of the top 10 anglers were either burning topwaters up shallow or big worms and drop-shots out deep.

Davis’ winning pattern

1. Clent Davis considers himself a good brush pile fisherman, so that’s what he targeted all week. He dragged a Mister Twister Mag 12 BUZZ Worm in plum apple on a 1/2-ounce head through them or swam a hollow-belly swimbait over them. He also a caught a few that came up breaking on a Yo-Zuri 3DR Series Pencil

2. Random was the name of the game for James Niggemeyer, as he kept a buzzbait with a toad or a Strike King KVD Sexy Dawg in his hands, getting bites anywhere and everywhere up shallow.

3. Justin Atkins might have pulled off winning back-to-back Cups had it not been for some lost big fish each day. He used a flutter spoon and Berkley Powerbait Fatty Bottom Hopper Worm on a Neko rig on offshore ledges, and a Berkley Choppo and a frog up shallow.

4. Nick LeBrun was the lone top-10 angler targeting vegetation, swimming and dragging a V&M Wild Thang worm with a 1/2-ounce Elite Tungsten weight and a Hayabusa hook through lily pads and offshore hydrilla beds. He also threw a 6th Sense Splashback and a plopper-style lure for schooling bass.

5. Jason Lambert found plenty of fish offshore willing to eat a drop-shot with a Roboworm Straight Tail Worm. The quality just wasn’t there, which prompted him to toss a River2Sea Whopper Plopper up shallow.

6. One lure – a YUM Tip Toad rigged weightless or on a buzzbait – was all Zack Birge used, burning it and his trolling motor down the bank as fast as he could.

7. Day-two leader Wes Logan relied on a NetBait Contour Worm on a drop-shot for fishing offshore brush piles. Up shallow it was the one-two punch of a Brian’s Bee Prop Bee or a Dirty Jigs Scott Canterbury Buzzbait.

8. No surprise, John Cox stayed shallow throughout the event, tossing a Berkley J-Walker or Berkley Choppo.

9. Brandon Cobb made his fourth-straight Cup top 10 thanks to a Greenfish Tackle Toad Toter buzzbait with a Zoom Horny Toad trailer. He also mixed in a Zoom Trickworm and a Yo-Zuri 3DR Series Pencil topwater.

10. Bradford Beavers caught a 7 1/2-pound giant the first day on a 1/2-ounce Treeshaker Buzz Toad that carried him. He also used a Roboworm Straight Tail Worm on brush piles.

Top 10 Patterns from Lake Guntersville

Aside from figuring out grass patterns, contestants in the championship had to deal with heavy pressure from another championship derby and major weather swings. Day one was cancelled due to the threat of severe storms, so the entire field fished Friday and Saturday. On day two, windy, overcast conditions forced many anglers to adjust. The wind died and the clouds lingered on Saturday, eventually parting and giving way to a beautiful autumn day on the water. READ MORE »

Top 10 Baits from Lake of the Ozarks

It may have felt like fall for the final Costa FLW Series Central Division event of the year on Lake of the Ozarks, but it didn’t exactly fish like it. The tournament, which was presented by Evinrude, saw fish caught from deep to shallow and it was clear that the majority of fish were in transition from their summer haunts to where they’ll feed up for fall. Top 10 Patterns from the Cal Delta

Two heavy-hitting days buoyed Gregory Troughton to a 6-pound, 11-ounce lead going into a tough day three in the Costa FLW Series Western Division event presented by Power-Pole on the California Delta. The Discovery Bay, Calif., pro stumbled in the final round with a limit of 12-13, but outlasted the field and secured the win with 60-2. Troughton caught most of his fish by punching a Yamamoto Flappin Hog, but he added a few keepers on a Z-Man/Evergreen ChatterBait Jackhammer and a Don Iovino Splash-It popper. The Costa FLW Series Western Division finale presented by Power-Pole on the Cal Delta presented challenging conditions due to the autumn transition and the effects of herbicide spraying. The final stop in the Northern Division Costa FLW Series wrapped up at smallmouth heaven, also known as the 1000 Islands, which kicked out some impressive bags of fish. Top 10 Baits From 1000 Islands

Fishing at the 1000 Islands for the final Costa FLW Series Northern Division event presented by Navionics wasn’t quite as easy as usual, despite the weights being solid and some mega bags being dropped on the scale. An algae bloom, a hard north wind and pressure lead to some finicky smallmouths and because of that finesse was the name of the game. Dealing with some hard to catch smalljaws? Give a few of these baits a try and you can likely put the odds in your favor. READ MORE »

Hindsight can be a helpful tool or a dangerous one for a tournament angler. On one hand, it’s useful for evaluating decision-making. Most Forrest Wood Cup participants knew Lake Ouachita was going to be tough. Few realized just how tough. Catching a limit was a grind, even through the final day. Yet, a number of pros – through solid patterning, hardheadedness or luck – managed to figure out Ouachita better than others, with none doing it better than winner Clent Davis, who spent all his time fishing brush piles out deep. The rest of the top 10 fished a mixture of deep and shallow water to try to get enough bites each day to stay in contention. READ MORE »
