UPCOMING EVENT: TOYOTA SERIES - 2020 - Pickwick Lake

Champlain Midday Update – Day 2

Champlain Midday Update – Day 2
Brett Carnright

You could hardly have ordered better weather for day two of the Costa FLW Series tournament presented by Power-Pole at Lake Champlain. It was a little windy in the morning, but it’s largely calmed down and there were swathes of the lake that were absolutely flat around 10:30 a.m.. The sun is high and bright, and there isn’t a cloud in the sky – sure, it was a little nippy at takeoff, but it’s going to be glorious at weigh-in.

As expected, spawning smallmouths are still setting the pace, but the leaders got done catching early and are either hunting more smallies for tomorrow or looking for kicker largemouths now. They’ve got great weather for either pursuit, and it seems likely that at least a few of them will upgrade some this afternoon.

Brett Carnright caught about seven fish this morning and got up to around 19.5 pounds by 9 o’clock. Austin Felix put together 15 pounds early but says he wants to catch another couple of fish to get to 17 pounds or better. Ron Nelson boxed up about 19 pounds of smallmouth real fast and has headed for largemouth water. Cory Johnston figures he’s got about 19 pounds and one of them is a largemouth – on top of it, he says his smallmouths are bigger than yesterday.

Also with fish, JJ Judd had 18 pounds or better. Joseph Wood caught two decent smallies real quick to start his day. Ryan Latinville had four over 3.5 nice and early as well. Later, around 11:15, Stephen Estes checked in with only about 11 pounds. Steve York had a pair of 3-pounders when we found him early. Chris O’Brien is off the pace – he just had a small limit for 10 pounds around 10:30. Also, Jeff Hippert has the makings of a good bag, with a pair of 5-pounders and three little ones.

Weigh-in is going to be awesome. The weather has been good enough that pros can run anywhere on the lake today, and that is bound to help some move up. That said, the leaders have also held up their end of the bargain. So be sure to tune in or come out for a ton of smallies.
