Willert Goes Back-to-Back

Willert Goes Back-to-Back
Joel Willert

Joel Willert’s quest to eventually fish from the front of the boat took a step forward when he won the co-angler crown at Lake Cumberland. That step became a leap after going back-to-back with his win at Smith.

The Minnesota co-angler weighed in limits of 12-10 and 11-10 to beat out the rest of the co-angler field in the FLW Tour event presented by T-H Marine on Lewis Smith Lake. For the win, Willert takes home $20,100.

Complete results

Along with taking over the lead in the Co-angler of the Year standings, Willert’s win makes him just the fifth co-angler to ever win back-to-back Tour events. The other four are:

  • Casey Martin (2011)
  • Alan Hults (2009)
  • Justin Lucas (2008)
  • Bobby Hendricks (2002)

“I could get used to this,” jokes Willert. “I’ve been super blessed the last three tournaments now. Things are really going my way.”

While this is his first year as a co-angler on Tour, he’s been a co-angler for years and actually has won on other circuits. So, he understands the importance of getting paired with the right pros. This week, those pros were Josh Douglas and Scott Martin.

While fishing with both, Willert said his main thing was always doing something a little different than both. That meant going smaller with his offerings. He chose smaller 2.8 and 3.3 Keitech Swing Impact FAT swimbaits on 3/16-ounce jig heads or he’d cut down a green pumpkin Zoom Trick Worm on a 3/16-ounce shaky head.

“Your pros have to be around a lot of fish to be successful, and mine were both days,” says Willert.

“I’ve been looking to eventually make a living fishing for a long time. Winning that last tournament and now this one should help make that happen.”

Co-angler Bickers Wins by Ounces

Co-angler Bickers Wins by Ounces

One fish is unlikely to win a three-day tournament, but the right one can help an angler dig out of a hole. Just ask co-angler Troy Bickers, who rebounded from the dreaded day-one goose egg to go worst-to-first in the Costa FLW Series Central Division opener presented by Lowrance on Kentucky Lake with a winning weight of 20 pounds, 14 ounces. Kentucky Lake Midday Update – Day 3

Kentucky Lake Midday Update – Day 3

Question marks are about the only certainty for day three of the Costa FLW Series Central Division event presented by Lowrance on Kentucky Lake, as the top 10 pros scattered and left us lean on details on a day where changing weather could see changing fortunes. After two dreary days of cloudy, dim conditions, the final round brought lots of the bright, sunny stuff that pushes fish tighter to cover and makes them easier to target. Also, considerably more warmth may very well put the giddy-up on seasonal progression. No one’s getting too crazy with visions of heavy bed-fishing, but accelerated prespawn movement is certainly possible. READ MORE »

Top 10 Patterns from Grand Lake

Top 10 Patterns from Grand Lake

Grand Lake has a history of being feast or famine, and it was a lot more famine this past week for the FLW Tour’s fourth stop of the 2019 season, presented by Mercury. Falling water and inconsistent weather made just catching a limit a herculean task, as nearly as many pros didn’t weigh in a fish as brought in a limit every day of the event. READ MORE »

Lawyer Wins at Grand

Lawyer Wins at Grand

Jeremy Lawyer has already had a successful career by many measures – a T-H Marine Bass Fishing League (BFL) All-American title and a Costa FLW Series win took care of that in 2016 and 2018. Today, the Sarcoxie, Mo., pro earned his biggest win yet at the FLW Tour presented by Mercury on Grand Lake. Weighing 13 pounds, 14 ounces on the final day, Lawyer totaled 62-12 to earn the win over Michael Matthee by tiebreaker. Ties on day four are broken by day three standings, and Lawyer went into the final day in third, while Matthee started the final day in fourth. READ MORE »

Thrift Eyes 7th Tour Title

Thrift Eyes 7th Tour Title

Seminole may have thrown Bryan Thrift for a loop, but he’s back on track through three days of the FLW Tour presented by Mercury on Grand Lake. Weighing 16 pounds each of the first two days, the Shelby, N.C., pro laid the wood to them on day three, boxing up 19 pounds, 3 ounces to move from fifth to first. With a total of 52-1, Thrift leads Jeremy Lawyer by just 3-3, which is a lot considering how good Thrift is, but not much considering how Grand has treated leaders thus far. READ MORE »

Boutries Moves to the Front at Grand

Boutries Moves to the Front at Grand

Day two of the FLW Tour presented by Mercury on Grand Lake was defined by a big storm that swept over the lake midday and lots of movement on the leaderboard. In first after the dust settled, Bailey Boutries of Daphne, Ala., weighed 20 pounds, 6 ounces to get up to a 35-4 total and the lead in the fourth FLW Tour event of his career. Just 4 ounces behind him is John Cox, and just 1 ounce behind him is Bradford Beavers, so his lead is perhaps not the safest, but it’s still a lead going into the weekend of a Tour event. Niles Rallies for Co-angler Title

Niles Rallies for Co-angler Title

The Southeastern Division event on Lake Okeechobee presented by Power-Pole was a grind no matter if you were in the front of the boat or back. Bites were few and far between, and as a co-angler just catching a keeper or two kept you in the hunt. Niles started strong with an opening-day limit worth 18-9 to have him in the lead. On day two, he cooled off and brought a goose egg to the stage. Still, his day-one weight carried him to the final round where he started the day in fourth. Paired with Brett Preuett, Niles got to work Saturday. READ MORE »

Jocumsen Glides to Guntersville Lead

Jocumsen Glides to Guntersville Lead

For the last four or five years, FLW pro Carl Jocumsen has been tinkering and testing, experimenting and dialing in ways to incorporate glide baits into his tournament arsenal. He’s been trying to figure out how it can shift gears from being a big-bass bait to a tournament tool. Apparently, he’s getting really close to nailing down those details. Today, Jocumsen used a glide bait to pound out a 20-pound, 2-ounce limit at Lake Guntersville to establish the lead at the 2018 Costa FLW Series Championship. “It’s one of those days you’ll never forget,” he says. “I hope I can back it up tomorrow.” READ MORE »
