Anders Gets Elusive First Win

Anders Gets Elusive First Win
Joe Anders

Joe Anders is quite the local stick, having won a number of events in the area in recent years. He’d never won an FLW event, though. Well, at least not until Friday.

After taking the lead on day one with 17-6, the angler from Easley, S.C., followed that up with 14-4 to beat out Brad Wiley of Alto, Ga., by 9 ounces to win the co-angler crown and a prize package worth $25,100 at the FLW Tour Event presented by Ranger on Lake Lanier.

Leading pro pattern

“This is a dream come true,” says Anders. “I’ve won everywhere except FLW, and I’ve been fishing BFLs for years. I’ve been close so many times.”

Typically, Anders fishes as a boater, but after seeing a Facebook ad about being a co-angler he and a friend signed up. Turns out, he made the right choice.

Anders started his tournament throwing a shaky head while fishing with pro Michael Wooley. Try as he might though, he couldn’t get bit on it. Frustrated, he picked up a brown ½-ounce E&L jig and caught a 5-pounder on his first cast and caught another 5-pounder on it later. He mixed in a jerkbait for his other three fish.

Ironically, while he caught three fish on the jig Friday while fishing with Billy Hines, it was the shaky head that did the heavy lifting.

“Both my big ones today came on shaky heads,” says Anders, whose jig of choice was a 5/16-ounce Big Bite Baits Stand Up Fintwist jig head rigged with a green pumpkin worm.

Kelley Grabs Lead with 43 Pounds

Kelley Grabs Lead with 43 Pounds

Down near Ogdensburg, N.Y. – roughly 45 miles from takeoff – was the area on day one of the Costa FLW Series Northern Division finale presented by Gajo Baits, as the majority of the top bags came from there. A day later, it was the anglers who ran 75 miles or more down to Clayton, N.Y., and beyond who scored big, while the Ogdensburg bunch either capitalized in small windows or not at all. READ MORE »

With slightly warmer weather and similar sun and wind conditions, day two of the Costa FLW Series Northern Division presented by Gajo Baits on the St. Lawrence River should’ve presented optimal conditions for smallmouth. Hatch Leads by 1 Ounce

Hatch Leads by 1 Ounce

There were no 25-pound mega-bags coming across the stage at weigh-in of the final leg of the Costa FLW Series Northern Division. The event on the St. Lawrence River, presented by Gajo Baits, hasn’t been the slugfest many expected after one day of fishing. There were still plenty of 20-pound bags, though, and the St. Lawrence on a bad day is still a tremendous fishery. READ MORE »

St. Lawrence Midday Update – Day 1

St. Lawrence Midday Update – Day 1

The final leg of the Costa FLW Series Northern Division presented by Gajo Baits on the St. Lawrence River opened to perfect conditions for anyone looking to burn some gas. Yes, it was a crisp 40 degrees at takeoff, but it was clear and calm. In fact, the current is ripping so hard it’s keeping the river as flat as most anglers have ever seen. Most pros should’ve been able to run all 95 miles to Lake Ontario (and into the lake if they wanted to) with little trouble. READ MORE »

To Run or Not to Run

To Run or Not to Run

The final leg of the Costa FLW Series Northern Division on the St. Lawrence River, presented by Gajo Baits, is primed to be a smallmouth smashfest, as usual. That said, this year’s event, which is presented by Realtree Fishing, will launch out of Massena, N.Y., instead of the usual Clayton. So, what was once a 15-or-so-mile run to the mouth of the lake from takeoff – and roughly 30-plus miles to Gallo Island or Main Duck – will now be about a 95-mile run just to get to the lake. Cox and Dudley on their AOY Chances

Every angler starts his season with the hope of being in contention for AOY by the final tournament. Mathematically, only a handful of anglers are still in it this year, but realistically, as the FLW Tour heads to its final stop of 2019 at Lake Champlain, it’s a two-angler race. READ MORE »
