UPCOMING EVENT: Costa FLW Series - 2019 - Potomac River

FISHING LEAGUE WORLDWIDE

Rayburn Midday Update - Day 1

Rayburn Midday Update - Day 1
Kevin Lasyone

Day one of the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division event on Sam Rayburn, which is presented by YETI, kicked off for the record field of 225 boats under calm winds, cloudy skies and air temperatures in the high 60s. Skies remained mostly cloudy throughout the morning, but winds definitely picked up some as the day progressed.

Throughout the morning most of the anglers seemed to be targeting transition points or banks leading back to spawning areas in creeks and drains, with mixed success. Some, such as FLW pro Brandon Mosely, had only two small keepers by mid-morning, while others struck gold early. Local stick Kevin Lasyone bagged an estimated 25 pounds by noon fishing slow both deep and shallow.

But overall, “somewhat slow and mostly shallow” seemed to be the rule rather than the exception Thursday morning. Early on, both Russell Cecil and Phil Marks had one fish apiece, and Marks said his deep bite wasn’t happening and that he had to go shallow to get a bite.

As expected on Rayburn, lipless crankbaits in the grass seemed to be one of the more popular tactics on day one, but square-bills and Carolina rigs were also part of the mix for quite a few anglers.

Thursday’s warm, cloudy conditions were supposed to be ideal for fishing, so what will weigh-in reveal? Will the afternoon bite bring big bags or big disappointment? Find by watching the weigh-in live, beginning at 3 p.m. CT on flwfishing.com
