With the number of giant bass and huge limits coming out of Lake Sam Rayburn in recent weeks, the burning question on day one of the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division on Sam Rayburn presented by YETI became: would the 30-pound mark be broken again?

Kevin Lasyone of Dry Prong, La., wasted little time in answering that question when he toted a massive 31 pounds, 6 ounces to the scales to set the bar on day one. The biggest bass in his limit topped out at 8 pounds, 2 ounces.

Lasyone’s previous largest limit on Rayburn was 29 pounds in another tournament several years ago. He never dreamed he would ever beat that haul, but it all happened by 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

“I pulled into this place and the first fish that bit was that biggest one,” he recalls. “As I got her up to the boat, I looked down in the water and there was another of equal size following her. One the next cast, I hooked another big one but it got me around a stump and came off. I’m pretty sure it was that other fish.”

Lasyone adds that all the fish came from a 150-yard stretch located dead smack in the middle of a community hole.

“I saw a bunch of folks practicing there, but when I got there this morning, only one other boat was fishing the area. I couldn’t believe it.”

Lasyone says the only thing he can figure is that he is fishing the area a lot slower with a jig.

“A V&M football jig,” he says. “It’s the only thing I throw – just dragging it real slow. The area is just a textbook pre-spawn spot.”

“This lake is in the best shape I’ve ever seen,” he adds. “It’s got both numbers and quality right now and I can’t wait to go back out there again tomorrow.”

Honeycutt leads co-anglers

Keith Honeycutt of Temple, Texas leads the Co-angler Division with 19 pounds, 11 ounces. Honeycutt is no stranger to leading FLW events from the back deck. He has a total of seven FLW Tour or Costa wins to his name, two of which have come from Lake Sam Rayburn.
