Holcomb Makes the Right Call

Holcomb Makes the Right Call
Brian Holcomb

Brian Holcomb of Madisonville, Tennessee, won the T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Volunteer Division tournament on Watts Bar Lake Sunday with a two-day cumulative catch of nine bass weighing 22 pounds, 1 ounce. For his win, Holcomb pocketed $6,804.

Holcomb says he started out the event fishing mid-lake pockets near Euchee Marina and Resort.

“I caught them on Saturday throwing a white 3/8-ounce buzzbait,” says Holcomb, who earned his first career-victory in FLW competition. “I targeted isolated milfoil clumps and caught four keepers in less than 2 feet of water.

“On Sunday I went back to the same area, but I couldn’t get a bite on the buzzbait,” continues Holcomb. “I switched to a (Gambler Cane) toad and was able to put together a limit.”

Holcomb worked through numerous pockets between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., and caught seven keepers to finish out the tournament.

“There had to be a transition on the bottom to the grass,” says Holcomb. “That was the key for me. If there wasn’t deeper water in front of the grass, they wouldn’t be there. I just kept relying on my judgement and it worked out for me.”

There were no 25-pound mega-bags coming across the stage at weigh-in of the final leg of the Costa FLW Series Northern Division. There were still plenty of 20-pound bags, though, and the St. Lawrence on a bad day is still a tremendous fishery. READ MORE »

St. Lawrence Midday Update – Day 1

The final leg of the Costa FLW Series Northern Division presented by Gajo Baits on the St. Lawrence River opened to perfect conditions for anyone looking to burn some gas. Yes, it was a crisp 40 degrees at takeoff, but it was clear and calm. In fact, the current is ripping so hard it’s keeping the river as flat as most anglers have ever seen. Most pros should’ve been able to run all 95 miles to Lake Ontario (and into the lake if they wanted to) with little trouble. READ MORE »
