Linganore Takes Maryland Open

Fiorille, Appleby advance to the 2018 High School Fishing National Championship

The Linganore High School duo of Dominic Fiorille of Mount Airy, Maryland, and Ryan Appleby of New Windsor, Maryland, brought a five-bass limit to the scale Saturday weighing 13 pounds, 15 ounces to win the 2017 Bass Pro Shops FLW High School Fishing Maryland Open tournament on the Potomac River. The win advanced the team to the 2018 High School Fishing National championship, held June 26-30 on a fishery yet to be revealed.

According to post-tournament reports, the Linganore High duo caught their fish using a Big Mouth Lures Big Shakey bladed jig around scattered grass in Belmont Bay.

A field of 10 teams competed in the no-entry fee, tournament which launched from Smallwood State Park in Marbury. In FLW/TBF High School Fishing competition, the top 10-percent of teams competing advance to the High School Fishing National Championship.

The top team on the Potomac River that advanced to the 2018 High School Fishing National Championship:

1^st:         Linganore High School, Frederick, Md. – Dominic Fiorille, Mount Airy, Md., and Ryan Appleby, New Windsor, Md., five bass, 13-15

Rounding out the top 5 teams:

2^nd:        Pomfret School, Pomfret, Conn. – Emery Kitts, Lapata, Md., and Aaron Dixon, Bal Alton, Md., five bass, 13-9            

3^rd:        River Hill High School, Clarksville, Md. – Woodie Lynott, Clarksville, Md., and Dylan Collen, Ellicott City, Md., five bass, 12-5

4^th:         Brunswick High School, Brunswick, Md. –  Kody Capps, Tuscarora, Md., and Ian Carr, Jefferson, Md., four bass, 8-4

5^th:         Loudoun County High School, Leesburg, Va. – Timothy McKinley and Carson Stevens, both of Sterling, Va., four bass, 6-12

The 2017 Bass Pro Shops FLW High School Fishing Maryland Open was a two-person (team) event for students in grades 7-12, open to any Student Angler Federation (SAF) affiliated high school club in the United States. The top 10 percent of each Challenge, Open, and state championship field will advance to the High School Fishing National Championship. The High School Fishing national champions will each receive a $5,000 college scholarship to the school of their choice.
