Top 10 Patterns from Lake Champlain

Top 10 Patterns from Lake Champlain

Prespawn and spawning smallmouths would win a lot more often on Lake Champlain if the catch-and-keep fishing season opened earlier in Vermont and New York. As it is, the tail end of the smallmouth spawn usually butts into the start of the tournament season, and smallmouths become key for only a short period of time. This year, due to a wet and cool spring, the big pond was running a little behind schedule when the Costa FLW Series event presented by Power-Pole got underway. As a result, the Northern Division opener featured bag after bag of spawning smallmouths. Though Ron Nelson needed to add in some largemouths for the win, the sheer number of 3-pound smalljaws that pros ran back to Plattsburgh was impressive. READ MORE »

Top 10 Baits from Lake Champlain

Top 10 Baits from Lake Champlain

Unlike some years, smallmouths dominated in the Costa FLW Series event presented by Power-Pole on Lake Champlain. Sure, Ron Nelson won with a mix of largemouths and smallmouths, but nobody in the top 10 was making the run to Ticonderoga (traditional largemouth waters), and the vast majority of the weight that hit the scale this week was brown. Smallmouths played so well because so many were spawning, and many of the largemouths were caught off beds as well. That’s reflected strongly in the bait choices most of the pros made. READ MORE »

Champlain Midday Update – Day 2

Takeoff for day two of the Costa FLW Series presented by Power-Pole on Lake Champlain was pleasant enough. Sure, it was raining and blowing some, but it wasn’t torrential.
