Top 10 Patterns from the Mississippi River

The most recent FLW Tour event was the first to be held on the Mississippi River in La Crosse, Wis., giving anglers a clean slate to work from in terms of prior tournament knowledge and history. The number of FLW Tour pros who had sampled Pools 7, 8 and 9 in May prior to the tournament was low. Bryan Schmitt of Deale, Md., won the event by fishing grass in Pool 8 where a new crop of fresh prespawn bass was holding up for the next mating opportunity. Schmitt was really the only one in the top 10 who committed to grass exclusively for four days.Behind him, the other nine competitors found success on a variety of target areas, including wing dams, flooded bushes and trees, and current breaks. Top 10 Baits from the Mississippi River

Beautiful, sunny weather during practice gave way to cold fronts, rain and rising water once the tournament kicked off. For anglers still drying out from the deluge at Beaver lake, jigs and soft plastics again became the predominant baits when things turned tough and the weather turned sour. Swing heads, shaky heads, and creature baits also figured prominently in pros’ arsenals. READ MORE »

Mississippi River Day 4 Coverage

Heading out with the lead, Bryan Schmitt has a 12-ounce edge over Andy Morgan, but more than 2 pounds over Austin Felix who is in third. With how close the weights have been this week, that seems like a pretty good margin, but in ordinary tournament fishing it’s nothing. We’ve seen an 18-pound bag this week, and if someone catches another today, from whatever place, they just might walk away a champion. READ MORE »

Mississippi River Day 3 Coverage

Having a chance to win is no strange thing for Andy Morgan. The Tennessee pro has made a habit of fishing all four days throughout his career, and you don’t win three Angler of the Year titles by scuffling along. Nonetheless, the veteran pro has only managed one Tour victory throughout his illustrious career. This weekend, in the FLW Tour presented by Evinrude on the Mississippi River, Morgan has a chance to double that total. READ MORE »

Mississippi River Day 2 Coverage

Day one of the FLW Tour presented by Evinrude on the Mississippi really wasn’t as bad as advertised. Though the water is higher and muddier than it was, the fishing was still excellent and the weather was actually a pretty moderate. It’s already much colder on day two, and the rain and mud will have had more time to get into or settle out of the system – maintaining consistency is likely to be a challenge. READ MORE »

What the Mississippi has to Offer

Breaking down Pools 7, 8 and 9 of the Mississippi River is no simple task, but it’s what every one of the FLW Tour pros will endeavor to do this week in the sixth stop of the season. Based out of La Crosse, Wis., in Pool 8, the pros can fish up and downstream in each of the adjacent pools of the famous waterway, which gives them over 65 miles of main channel to run and miles more of backwaters and side channels spread between Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa. Checkin’ 7 with Stefan

The sixth stop of the FLW Tour presented by Evinrude on the Mississippi River is a breath of fresh air for Matt Stefan of Junction City, Wis., considering it is a short few short hours from his house. But just because he lives relatively close to the Mighty Miss doesn’t make him a river rat by any means. Stefan has fished this stretch of river numerous time throughout the summer and fall, but has never ventured here this early. Still, Stefan has a leg up on the field considering many of the pros have never even seen this section of river before and because of that I decided to jump in the boat with him while he did some exploring on day two of practice.
