Sheppard Marches to Co-angler Costa Title

Tyler Sheppard

Tyler Sheppard of Hermitage, Pa., led wire-to-wire and locked down the co-angler win in the 2016 Costa FLW Series Championship at Table Rock Lake with three bass for 7 pounds, 7 ounces on the final day. Sheppard’s total of 23-10 was enough to earn the Northern Division Co-angler of the Year a new Ranger boat and his first individual win with FLW.

“The first few days I caught them on an Alabama Rig,” says Sheppard. “I also caught them on a shaky head a little bit and flipping a finesse worm. Today I pretty much caught them all on a jig, and I caught one that helped on a finesse worm.”

Sheppard’s jig of choice was a 1/4-ounce Missile Jigs Mini Flip Jig trailered with a Strike King Menace Grub.

“I’d never been to Table Rock before,” says Sheppard. “It is a little bit like Raystown Lake [in Pennsylvania]. It [Raystown] is a deep, clear, bluffy lake with a bunch of rivers coming through near home. It [Table Rock] is not the same, but it wasn’t too much out of my comfort zone.”

Tyler Sheppard

Sheppard has blazed a trail of glory as a co-angler at the FLW Series level for a couple years now, but he’s also had success fishing in college For Slippery Rock University. Just this summer, Sheppard and teammate Logan Pollman pulled out a Northern Conference win on the Potomac. Now graduated, Sheppard is looking toward the future.

“I just started my master's in exercise physiology at Pitt,” says Sheppard. “I should be done this coming summer. I’m trying to get done a little early. I’m definitely going to be fishing out of the front of the boat next year. I’d love to do the Costas; it’s just trying to get the financial stuff in order.”

A new Ranger boat and a win at the FLW Series Championship ought to help out on that side of things.

“I don’t have any words to describe it,” says Sheppard of the win. “It’s unbelievable. I’m still shaking. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever felt before.”

Niles Rallies for Co-angler Title

Niles Rallies for Co-angler Title

The Southeastern Division event on Lake Okeechobee presented by Power-Pole was a grind no matter if you were in the front of the boat or back. Bites were few and far between, and as a co-angler just catching a keeper or two kept you in the hunt. Niles started strong with an opening-day limit worth 18-9 to have him in the lead. On day two, he cooled off and brought a goose egg to the stage. Still, his day-one weight carried him to the final round where he started the day in fourth. Paired with Brett Preuett, Niles got to work Saturday. READ MORE »

High Water will Factor at Rayburn

High Water will Factor at Rayburn

Typical winter fishing on Sam Rayburn would call for a lot of lipless crankbaits, Carolina rigs and a focus on offshore structure and submerged grass. However, for the FLW Tour opener January 10-13 a lot of that may be out the window – or at least a lot different than many of the Rayburn sticks in the field are used to. Sam Rayburn has risen steadily since December 10th, and as of January 3, the lake is at 171.43 feet, which is 7 feet over full pool of 164.4 feet. READ MORE »
