It is never good when you wake up the morning of a tournament and every flag you see is standing straight out at 3 a.m., but that was the case this morning for day two of the Costa FLW Series event on the 1000 Islands.

Friday has been the day that tournament officials and anglers have had their eye on all week due to the fact the forecast has called for sustained winds pushing 25 mph, steadily increasing throughout the day.

This morning the wind didn’t seem to let up any from yesterday – which was rough enough on the lake – and Tournament Director Ron Lappin made the call to make Lake Ontario off limits.

“As a tournament director you need to take all 274 anglers lives into consideration,” says Lappin. “The lake is going to get bad today and for the safety of our anglers we wanted keep them safe and let them fish in the river where it is more protected.”

A wind advisory is in effect for the region today and considering that a large portion of the field is running a ways out into Lake Ontario the decision is a good one.

The off-limits boundary will be the ferry line from Cape Vincent, N.Y., to Kingston, Ontario, across Wolfe Island. Anglers will be allowed to fish everything riverside of that mark.
