UPCOMING EVENT: Costa FLW Series - 2018 - Lake Okeechobee

Millsaps Prevails on Mitchell

David Millsaps of Ranger, Ga., won the May 7 Bama Division event on Lake Mitchell with a 19-pound, 11-ounce limit to claim a $6,400 payday.

David Millsaps of Ranger, Georgia, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 19 pounds, 11 ounces, Saturday to win the third FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Bama Division tournament of 2016 on Lake Mitchell. For his victory, Millsaps took home $6,414.

Millsaps says he spent the majority of his day fishing a bluff wall stretch on the upper end of the lake.

“I had one area that was really active, especially after the sun came out,” says Millsaps, who earned his third win in FLW competition. “It was a long, straight bluff wall with a dip in it where fish could get out of the current.”

Millsaps used a custom brown and black-colored jig to catch approximately 15 keepers throughout the event.

“I was sitting in about 20 feet of water and I’d let the jig slide down the wall,” says Millsaps. “That’s when they’d get it. My biggest bass – a 6-pounder – came from a seawall that had rocks on it. After that, I caught most of my fish between 1 and 3 p.m. – all on the jig.”

The Georgia angler filled his five-bass limit with just minutes to spare.

“I boated three in a row on a rocky point which protruded from the bluff wall and ended up weighing two of them,” says Millsaps.

Powers Taps Barkley in Wild Card

The T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) Wild Card is a last-chance shot at the All-American for BFL anglers that didn’t qualify for a Regional. Weighing limits for 17 pounds, 14 ounces on day one and 14-11 on day two, Powers’ 32-9 total was plenty for the win and qualification for the 2018 All-American on Cross Lake. Top 10 Patterns from Kentucky Lake

The fishing was downright bad for most in the 2017 Costa FLW Series Championship on Kentucky Lake. Instead of a strong topwater bite or a taste of the winter umbrella rig bite, most of the top finishers – outside of tournament-winner Bradford Beavers – had to scramble around and fish odd patterns or do a little bit of everything. Out of 192 boats, only seven pros limited each of the first two days, and only Beavers managed three limits in a row. READ MORE »

Top 10 Baits from Kentucky Lake

Kentucky Lake was unusually stingy for the anglers who fished the Costa FLW Series Championship, but the techniques used by the top 10 pros were certainly typical of the time of year. Topwater baits thrown on main-lake bars, flats and points, and umbrella rigs thrown in deeper areas, primarily on the main lake, were the go-tos. A few anglers also targeted shallow flats in the backs of creeks, and they mostly kept topwater in their hands when they did it. Otherwise, a few single swimbaits and vibrating jigs saw some work. Kentucky Lake Top 5 Patterns – Day 1

Tennessee River hammers Cole Floyd, Jason Lambert, Randy Haynes and Brandon Hunter all caught one or none on day one of the Costa FLW Series Championship on Kentucky Lake. Bryan Thrift showed off the potential of the lake with 27 1/2 pounds for the lead, but, overall, the fall bite has been hard to figure out for most of the pros. And although tons of anglers are tossing topwaters, the shallow bars aren’t dominating the standings like they often do in October. READ MORE »
