Keller Drags His Way to Co-angler Victory

Keller Drags His Way to Co-angler Victory
Steve Keller, Jr.

It was a Buckeye State sweep at the Costa FLW Series Central Division event presented by Lowrance on Kentucky Lake. Steve Keller Jr. of Bethel, Ohio, won the co-angler crown today with a three-day total weight of 34 pounds, 7 ounces. Keller actually once sold a Ranger bass boat to the tournament’s pro winner, Steve Floyd of Leesburg, Ohio.

Small world, but then again, Kentucky Lake is a popular destination lake for Ohioans because it’s just a short one-day drive away, and many Ohio bass clubs and circuits host championship events on the big western Kentucky waterway.

Keller pieced together his winning stringer in the back of the boat with pros who were fishing a mix of shallow bushes and main-lake spots, but it wasn’t the bushes themselves that produced his win.

“The first day I was with a guy who stayed local around Paris. We were in and out of cuts flipping, and when we got out on points I dragged a Carolina rig with a Zoom Lizard,” Keller says.

On the second day, Keller pulled out the Lizard again when his boater backed off the bank it little bit. Making short casts toward the bushes and dragging the rig back out was all it took. He set up the rig with a 1/2-ounce tungsten weight about 3 feet up the line from a 5/0 Owner wide-gap hook on 15-pound-test Seaguar fluorocarbon.

“I’ve won a lot of money down here on that Lizard in chartreuse pumpkin, just dragging it real slow,” Keller adds.

Today, the only change Keller had to make while fishing with pro Jeff Ritter was to flip a Missile Baits D-Bomb when Ritter had him positioned too close to some island willows to drag the Carolina rig. In the morning he wound a ChatterBait across a flat.

Be Aggressive to Catch Big Spots Now

Be Aggressive to Catch Big Spots Now

When FLW pro Alex Davis isn’t hunting trophy bucks in the fall, he spends a lot of days fishing for big bass that are binging on shad in the reservoirs of north Alabama. In particular, fall is a killer time to fish jerkbaits with high-speed, aggressive tactics in clear-water reservoirs for spotted bass – for both size and numbers. READ MORE »

Why You Should Crank Current Breaks Now

Why You Should Crank Current Breaks Now

“It’s almost like a wintertime pattern already,” Salzman says. “It’s kind of interesting. Because it’s been so hot and then so cold, the fish kind of got into the mouths of the creeks this year and never fully pushed into them. The majority of the bait is on the main lake on every lake in Alabama. The water temp was falling so quickly that the back bays were too cold, so the most stable water is on the main lake.” READ MORE »

The rest fished for smallies and considered green bass to be bonus fish and spotted bass to be limit fillers on the tough days. READ MORE »

New Dominates Seminole Regional

New Dominates Seminole Regional

Belmont, N.C., angler Bryan New, who’s regularly one of FLW’s top performers in the grassroots ranks, had established a dominant pace. New weighed in 22 pounds, 9 ounces on day one and added 20-2 on day two to carry a lead of 6 pounds, 15 ounces into the finals. A roughly 7-pound margin isn’t necessarily a sure thing on Seminole, but the fall bite was a bit slower than what the lake can produce, and it was obvious New was cruising. READ MORE »

Redemption for missing out on the FLW Cup in his first season. Redemption for what Grand did to him earlier this year on Tour (dropping from sixth to 41st with only one fish on day two). And, in a way, validation for a career filled with big accomplishments. READ MORE »
