Chunk Rock Pays for Young

David Young of Mayfield, Ky., won the March 5 LBL Division event on Kentucky Lake with a 26-pound, 1-ounce limit and took home over $9,200 in winnings.

David Young of Mayfield, Kentucky, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 26 pounds, 1 ounce, Saturday to win the first FLW Bass Fishing League (BFL) LBL Division tournament of 2016 on Kentucky and Barkley lakes. For his victory, Young took home $9,235.

“I originally planned on fishing this event out deep, but the sun came out earlier than I expected so I had to adjust my strategy,” says Young, who earned his 10th career win in FLW competition. “With warmer water I knew the fish would be shallow, so I ended up hitting chunk rock along main-lake banks.

“I split my day between about 15 areas,” Young continues. “I’d catch a fish or two and then move on to more chunk rock. If you didn’t find similar rock in terms of size and depth, it was difficult to hook them.”

Young used one bait – a red Bill Lewis Rat-L-Trap – to catch 10 keepers fairly consistently over the course of the day.

“I had to let it bump the rocks or else I wasn’t going to catch them,” says Young. “Once in a while I would avoid hitting them altogether and would reel fast to see if that technique was more efficient, but it never produced. For me, having the Trap deflect off of the rocks was what helped me edge out the rest of the field.”

Gross Grabs Toho Lead

Day three of the FLW Tour presented by Ranger Boats on Lake Toho was tough on the leaders, but Buddy Gross stayed steady, rising to first from fifth with 19 pounds, 12 ounces. In total, Gross has amassed 62 pounds even through three days, which is just about a pound ahead of Darrell Davis, who caught 25-12 for a 60-15 total and rocketed up to second from 13th. Going into the final day, everyone in the top six is within 5 pounds of the lead, and the way the Kissimmee Chain is pumping out big ones, that counts as the slimmest of margins. READ MORE »

Roder Out Front on Big O

Okeechobee is normally the place of dreams. This week, however, it isn’t quite living up to its reputation. Troy Roder of Brookeland, Texas, set the pace early with a 19-pound, 15-ounce limit to grab the lead in the season opener – presented by Power-Pole – with a lead of over 4 pounds heading into Friday.
