Top 10 Baits from Lake Okeechobee

Top 10 Baits from Lake Okeechobee

The Walmart FLW Tour presented by Ranger Boats on Lake Okeechobee went from a tight race to a runaway in a hurry when Bradley Hallman just wouldn’t stop catching the big ones. As for the lures he used, and those put to work by the rest of the top 10, some Okeechobee staples were applied as well as a few oddball baits. If you’re thinking of heading down to the Big O or anywhere else in Florida soon, you might want to acquire a few of the lures they fished.

Bradley Hallman’s winning pattern

Complete results

1. Bradley Hallman relied on a neon blue-colored Reaction Innovations Sweet Beaver with a matching punch skirt and a 1 ½-ounce weight for the bulk of his winning catch. Per Hallman, one of the keys was a special 8-foot punching rod from Mosley RodWorks. On the final day, he switched to a Gambler BB Cricket for a slower approach that countered the effects of cooler weather on the fish.

2. Alex Davis flipped, pitched and cast a 6-inch junebug stickworm rigged with a variety of weights and teamed with 80-pound-test PowerPro MaxCuatro spooled on Shimano Metanium with 8.5:1 gear ratio. Depending on the density of the cover, Davis varied between a 7-6 Shimano Expride flipping stick and an even heaver stick, the 7-6 G. Loomis E6X 904C.

3. Representing #TeamCanada, Chris Johnston caught a few bass on a spinnerbait, but his most productive bait was a black-and-blue Sweet Beaver on a 7-11, heavy-power G. Loomis IMX flipping stick (that he borrowed from Brandon McMillan) and a Shimano Metanium with 8.5:1 gear ratio and 65-pound-test PowerPro. As wind direction and intensity varied, Johnston also varied between using a ¾- and 1 1/2-ounce weight.

4. Michael Neal notched another high finish on Okeechobee with a black-and-blue TrueSouth Custom Lures TS-4 Swim Jig in 3/8- and ½-ounce models with a 4 ½-inch hematoma-colored Big Bite Baits Cane Thumper for a trailer. He threw it on a 7-1 Cashion Fishing Rods model that he helped design for ChatterBaits, with an Ardent Apex Elite reel in 6.5:1 gear ratio and 60-pound-test Sunline FX2 braid.

5. Shinichi Fukae didn’t commit to the flipping bite as much as he needed to, but when he did, his weapon of choice was a black-and-blue 4 ½-inch Yamamoto Flappin Hog with a matching punch skirt and a Fish Arrow tungsten weight that ranged from 1 ½ to 2 ounces. His primary combo was a prototype Shimano Zodias flipping and punching rod with the same Shimano Metanium that many others used, and 60-pound-test YGK braided line.

6. The only surprise about Brandon McMillan’s program on Okeechobee might have been that he didn’t finish higher. His flipping setup consisted of a 7-11 G. Loomis IMX flipping stick, the ever-present Shimano Metanium, 60-pound-test Gamma Torque braid, a blueberry-colored Zoom UV Speed Craw and ¾- to 2-ounce Elite Tungsten weights.

7. Joshua Weaver started his rookie season off with a bang. His primary bait was a McMillan secret-colored 4x4 Brandon McMillan Signature Series Swim Jig paired with a sungill-colored Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper and cast with a 7-6, medium-heavy-power, fast-action Berkley E-Motion rod with braided line. Weaver also caught fish pitching and flipping a blueberry-colored Zoom UV Speed Craw.

8. Clark Reehm fished a Megabass Ito Vision 110 thrown on a 704CB Dobyns Champion crankbait rod and 17-pound-test Seaguar InvizX fluoro. His second rig consisted of a black sapphire-colored Zoom UV Speed Craw with a ¼-ounce weight fished on a 7-4, heavy-power Dobyns Champion Extreme and 25-pound test Seaguar AbrazX.

9. Coming all the way from California, Charlie Weyer relied on the classic 6-inch Yamamoto Senko in black and blue and watermelon red. He threw the Senkos with a 7-6 Major Craft MSX 76BB rod and 20-pound-test Seaguar Tatsu, and varied his weights from 3/16- to 3/8-ounce.

10. Billy Shelton put weight in the boat with a Zoom Magnum Fluke and a UV Magnum Speed Worm, but his primary bait was a black-and-blue Sweet Beaver with a 1 ½-ounce weight.

Vlog: Becker's 3 Patterns from Martin

Vlog: Becker's 3 Patterns from Martin

Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit pro Matt Becker recently shared a great video that details the three patterns he used to earn a fourth-place finish at the season’s third stop on Lake Martin. Becker, who’s currently second in the Angler of the Year race, caught both largemouth and spotted bass and capitalized on a variety of tactics for a top finish. His patterns included targeting staging and spawning spotted bass on shoals, skipping docks and sight-fishing for spawning largemouths.  READ MORE »

Spotted bass dominated the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit on Lake Martin, but they didn’t win it. Sure, the sheer abundance of spotted bass in Martin left most pros’ thumbs bloody and raw from catching so many fish. Yet, it was the key largemouth that really separated the field, and what helped Jason Abram earn his first victory. READ MORE »

Top 10 Baits from Hartwell

Because of high water and cooler conditions, bass on Lake Hartwell haven’t quite gotten fully into the mood to spawn. Top 10 Patterns from Hartwell

Early March on Lake Hartwell can be feast or famine. The bite often depends on weather patterns, as both largemouth and spotted bass are staging before the spawn. MLF Bass Pro Tour pro Marty Robinson pulled off a wire-to-wire win, but the victory wasn’t easy. The final field of 10 contained a lot of local knowledge and experienced anglers who were ready to knock Robinson off should he falter. Here’s a look at how the rest of the top 10 caught their fish and earned their paychecks. READ MORE »

Top 10 Patterns from Lake Chickamauga

Top 10 Patterns from Lake Chickamauga

In February, with water temperatures in the high 40s, no one expected a fast and furious bite during the 2020 Toyota Series Central Division tournament on Lake Chickamauga. What everyone hoped for was quality fish. There were two 10-pound-plus bass brought to the weigh-in stand, but it appeared consistency was the name of the game, at least for the winner, Jim Neece Jr. of Bristol, Tenn.  READ MORE »

Top 10 Patterns from the Harris Chain

In past FLW events on the chain, the grass was best in Griffin and Harris, but this time Dora, Beauclair, Eustis and Harris provided most of the top bags. Targeting hydrilla, eelgrass and hard spots, prespawn and postspawn fish were the focus for the vast majority of the top schools. READ MORE »

Top 10 Baits from Lake Chickamauga

It was February, so low temperatures were the norm for the 2020 Toyota Series Central Division tournament on Lake Chickamauga. Water temperatures were in the high 40s, which meant the bass were generally not overly aggressive or active. Not all, but most fish were taken in shallow water where the bass were moving up to feed and/or take advantage of warmer, shallower water. READ MORE »

Top 10 Baits from the Harris Chain

Between cold fronts and pressure, the Harris Chain has been a tough nut to crack, yet the top teams in the Abu Garcia College Fishing presented by YETI National Championship presented by Lowrance got it done with a combination of plastic and hard baits. Certainly, the teams learned a thing or two from the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit event held the week prior on the chain, but you still can never go wrong with a Texas-rigged worm, vibrating jig or lipless crankbait in Florida. Each day of the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit event presented by Bad Boy Mowers on the Harris Chain of Lakes was markedly different from the day prior. At Florida’s Harris Chain, in late winter, it’s a good bet the same handful of baits are going to produce more than any others, from Lake Harris down to Apopka. Top 10 Patterns from the St. Johns

The Toyota Series Southern Division opener on the St. Johns River potentially missed some stellar fishing opportunities. Despite being the time of year when big green fish start to move up to the banks en masse to spawn, changing weather conditions and multiple cold fronts kept fish coming and going all week, opening small windows on which pros and co-anglers needed to capitalize. Top 10 Baits from the St. Johns

The St. Johns River was in a bit of a funk for the Toyota Series Southern Division opener. Instead of a full-on spawning slugfest, a couple cold fronts and quickly changing wind and water conditions kept fish moving in and out. The anglers chasing them had to stay on their toes. Plenty of pros did find quality fish, though, and they did so with a lot of familiar baits when it comes to late-winter fishing in Florida. Right now, it’s all about the black and blue plastics on the St. Johns. READ MORE »
