Cales Earns Co-angler Win
Old-school lizard gets it done
Co-angler Tim Cales of Sandstone, W.Va., earned his second win with FLW after sacking up 30 pounds, 11 ounces over two days in the Walmart FLW Tour event presented by Ranger Boats on Lake Okeechobee.
“I caught most of them flippin’ a lizard, and one big one yesterday on a Gambler Big EZ [swimbait],” says Cales, who has fished with FLW since 2009 at a variety of levels. “I broke a big one off yesterday on the swimbait, on 65-pound-test braid, but apparently I didn’t need it.
“I practiced with Michael Hall [who finished 124th on the pro side],” adds Cales. “That’s when I figured the lizard deal out and got confidence in it. I was pretty much just flipping it in holes, wherever there was a hole in the pads or the weeds. It seemed like the thicker the cover was the bigger the fish was.”
Cales’ magic recipe was a watermelon red-colored Deep Creek Lures Lizard with 20-pound-test fluorocarbon and a 5/16-ounce weight.
“I got laid off a while ago,” reveals Cales. “I’m a crane operator, and I’ll probably go back in about a month, but this is going to carry me through. God has definitely blessed me.”
