Day two of the Rayovac FLW Series presented by Evinrude on Clear Lake has been a little slower than day one. Both Mark Crutcher (first place with 29-9) and Matt Newman (second with 24-5) were struggling early on. Crutcher had a limit, but it weighed less than 10 pounds and badly needed some upgrades. Newman was camped on his primary area and swore that the fish were still there – he just couldn’t get more than a couple middling keepers in.

For the second day in a row, the majority of the field was concentrated east of Soda Bay. That said, a few anglers, including ninth place Thomas Kanemoto and 23rd place Chad Hulbert were plying the grass and docks on the north shore. Overall, the shade bite that was so productive for Joe Uribe Jr. and others on the first day has gotten a little tougher, but it was still producing for some. In fact, 42nd place Greg Gutierrez was well on his way to a 20-pound limit off the shade before 10:30 in the morning.

We did our best to check on the rest of the contenders, but many were winning at hide and seek. That said, Kyle Grover had a pair of 4-pounders and a few small ones, Uribe Jr. had three for close to 10 pounds and Jim Hawkes was in almost the same boat.

The weather is still perfect, but it is just slightly cooler and windier today. Perhaps the bite will pick up as the sun bakes on the grass and rock a little longer. Either way, we’re likely to see a dramatic scramble to make it into the top 10 cut. For that, be sure to come back for FLW Live at 3 p.m. PT.
