Kelley Crowned Co-angler Champ

Arkansas co-angler Cody Kelly took top honors on Kentucky Lake with 54-9 over three days.

PARIS LANDING, Tenn. – The third time was indeed the charm for Cody Kelley here at the Walmart FLW Tour event presented by Evinrude on Kentucky Lake, as the Arkansas fisherman won the co-angler title with a combined stringer weight of 54 pounds, 9 ounces.

It was Kelley’s third tournament on Kentucky Lake, and, while the results of the previous two were uneventful, this one proved to be quite profitable for him. Kelley edged out Joe McClary of Missouri by 8 ounces to claim the top prize of $20,000. McClary got $7,000, while third-place finisher John Wilson took home $5,000.

Kelley fished with pros Brandon Cobb, Brent Long and Tom Redington in the competition and paired his ledge-fishing knowledge with the pros’ ability to locate fish for a winning combination.

“What helped me is that all three of my pro partners knew how to read fish and when to stay on a ledge or move if the fish didn’t seem to be active,” says Kelley. “For instance, today [Saturday], Tom Redington and I fished the big stretch of lake between Kenlake [State Park Resort] and Moor’s [Resort]. We didn’t just stop and fish every place where we marked fish, though. If they were off to the side suspended in deeper water, or not bunched up on a ledge, we just kept moving. It was an efficient use of time.”

On the other hand, Kelley says Long fished the same spot as if he had nothing but time, and it also yielded fish. Kelley boated his best stringer, 21-2, in the second round while fishing with the North Carolina pro and moved into the co-angler lead for good.

“We stayed in the same place all day long. He [Long] is very patient and will stick with a spot if he feels that the payoff is going to come sooner or later,” adds Kelley. “I wouldn’t say the fish really got fired up, but we did catch some good stringers.”

Kelley used a Crock-O-Gator Swamp Bug Senior on a jighead, a Zoom Magnum Finesse worm in green pumpkin magic rigged Texas-style or a custom-made 1 ½-ounce spinnerbait to amass his total.

“I was really nervous going out today. I thought I would need a minimum of 17 or 18 pounds to win,” says Kelley. “I had everything I weighed in by 10 o’clock and only caught one more fish after that. So it was a pretty stressful day.”

Kelley’s bonus is that he has qualified to fish the Forrest Wood Cup on Lake Murray in August.

Joe McClary weighed 54-1 over three days to take second place and earn $7,500 on the co-angler side. 2nd place – Joe McClary – 54 pounds, 1 ounce

McClary went through an arsenal of ledge baits in his effort to match his pros’ style of fishing. He was paired by Lionel Botha on day one and weighed in 18-8. On the second day, fishing with Rob Kilbee, McClary caught 17-7. In the championship round, he was paired with Skip Johnson and tallied 18-2, the day’s best co-angler stringer.

“This is as close as I’ve come to winning. It’s especially disappointing to get this close and not win, but it is what it is,” observes McClary. “I think the key turning point for me was when I lost a 5-pounder at the boat with about 10 minutes to go in the second round.”

McClary rotated ¾-ounce D&L football jigs with Pocket Craw trailers, various drop-shot baits, swimbaits and Zoom Trick Worms to catch his weight.

South Carolina co-angler John Wilson weighed 50-6 over three days and earned a $5,000 paycheck. 3rd place – John Wilson – 50 pounds, 6 ounces

Most of the South Carolina co-angler’s fish came on a Carolina rig teamed with a Zoom Trick Worm in green pumpkin magic. He drew partners Philip Jarabeck, Terry Bolton and Andy Morgan and tallied stringers of 17-7, 15-1 and 17-14, respectively.

“I had three awesome partners,” says Wilson. “I fished around the fish because of them, and their style of fishing pretty much matched up with mine.”

Niles Rallies for Co-angler Title

The Southeastern Division event on Lake Okeechobee presented by Power-Pole was a grind no matter if you were in the front of the boat or back. Bites were few and far between, and as a co-angler just catching a keeper or two kept you in the hunt. Niles started strong with an opening-day limit worth 18-9 to have him in the lead. On day two, he cooled off and brought a goose egg to the stage. Still, his day-one weight carried him to the final round where he started the day in fourth. Paired with Brett Preuett, Niles got to work Saturday. READ MORE »

Kyle Walters of Grant Valkaria, Fla., won the 2018 Costa FLW Series Championship on Lake Guntersville with a two-day total weight of 44 pounds, 3 ounces. Walters punched grass mats for two days, utilizing the same approach in the same area as when he won the 2013 T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League Regional on Guntersville. The champ dropped 24-4 – the biggest limit of the event – on the scale today to hold off a charge by Bryan Thrift. READ MORE »

Jocumsen Glides to Guntersville Lead

For the last four or five years, FLW pro Carl Jocumsen has been tinkering and testing, experimenting and dialing in ways to incorporate glide baits into his tournament arsenal. He’s been trying to figure out how it can shift gears from being a big-bass bait to a tournament tool. Apparently, he’s getting really close to nailing down those details. Today, Jocumsen used a glide bait to pound out a 20-pound, 2-ounce limit at Lake Guntersville to establish the lead at the 2018 Costa FLW Series Championship. “It’s one of those days you’ll never forget,” he says. “I hope I can back it up tomorrow.” READ MORE »

Troughton Triumphs on Cal Delta

Despite a slow day that yielded only 12 pounds, 13 ounces, Gregory Troughton of Discovery Bay, Calif., held on to his day-two lead and won the Costa FLW Series Western Division tournament presented by Power-Pole on the California Delta with a three-day total of 60-2. Days one and two saw Troughton catch all of his fish on a heavy punch rig. Day three brought challenging post-frontal conditions, and he had to vary his presentations. Tiano Claims Co-angler Title

Catching fish from the back of the boat isn’t a big concern at the 1000 Islands where smallmouths swim around by the millions. Drew Tiano of Hudson, N.Y., took the lead on day one of the Costa FLW Series tournament presented by Navionics with 23 pounds, 9 ounces and never looked back. He sacked another 20-11 on day two to maintain the pole position and added another 15-1 on a tough day three to claim the biggest title of his career. Davis Bounces Back … And Then Some

By his own admission, Clent Davis came close to being the Forrest Wood Cup champion that wasn’t. Davis, of Montevallo, Ala., was crowned the 2018 Cup champion Sunday evening in Hot Springs’ Bank OZK Arena by virtue of a three-day sack that totaled 36 pounds, 13 ounces. In his remarks before the standing-room-only crowd of 9,000, however, Davis noted that he almost decided to forego the 2018 season and return to a job with an Alabama power company. He attributed his change of heart to a phone conversation he had with Bill Taylor, FLW’s senior director of tournament operations, last fall. Taylor convinced the 32-year-old Davis that instead of giving up a promising career as an angler, he return to the FLW Tour fold. READ MORE »

When Neil Farlow left Safe Harbor Marina in boat 156 on the opening morning of the Costa FLW Series North Division event presented by Polaris and hosted by Buffalo Niagara Sports Commission, his was an easy choice to make: He opted for quality over quantity. Another Smallmouth Smackdown?

A lot can change about a fishery in seven years, and not always for the best. The consensus on Lake Erie at Buffalo, N.Y., site of the second Costa FLW Series Northern Division tournament this weekend, is that the smallmouth fishing is better than 2011 when the Series last visited. This year’s event, presented by Polaris and hosted by Buffalo Niagara Sports Commission, begins Thursday morning at 6 a.m. ET out of Buffalo’s Safe Harbor Marina and will involve about 180 pros and an equal number of co-anglers.
