FLW College Fishing Headed to Grand Lake

FLW College Fishing Headed to Grand Lake
Ominous skies at takeoff bespoke the potential for rough weather on day one at Grand Lake.

MONKEY ISLAND, Okla. (June 10, 2014) - FLW College Fishing is headed to Grand Lake June 21 for the second regular-season stop in the Southern Conference. Up to 50 college teams will be competing for a top award of $2,000 and a berth in the Southern Conference Invitational tournament.

"A big factor in this tournament will be the rain," said Chevy pro Jimmy Houston of Cookson, Okla., who finished fourth in the Walmart FLW Tour tournament held on Grand Lake in 2013. "If the water rises into the bushes it will change the lake from how it normally fishes this time of year.

"Normally during the summertime it is all about offshore fishing, like it is on the Tennessee River. There are a lot of fish caught in deeper water on big crankbaits, football jigs and plastic worms," Houston said. "If the water doesn't get in the bushes, that's where most of the fish will be.

"There's a lot of brush out deep. It's an old lake and there is a lot of man-made brush deep in that lake. Most of the tournaments that are won deep are won on brush piles.

"However, if the water gets up in the bushes, everyone will have to fish them," continued Houston. "They will be loaded with four- and five-pound bass. The fish don't necessarily move into them immediately, but they'll do it if the water gets in them."

Houston said that if the bushes were holding fish, BOOYAH spinnerbaits, Z-Man Original ChatterBaits, small crankbaits, jigs and soft-plastic craws would be good baits for the college anglers to try.

Houston predicted that the winner would bring about 20 pounds to the scale.

Anglers will take off from Martin Landing located at 26700 S. Highway 125 on Monkey Island at 6:30 a.m. Weigh-in will be held at the takeoff location starting at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. Takeoff and weigh-in is free and open to the public.
