Leue lights up Ouachita River with Co-angler win

Daniel Leue of Colusa, Calif., wins the Co-angler Divsion of the EverStart Championship with a three-day total of 20 pounds, 3 ounces.

MONROE, La. - It's been quite an EverStart season for Daniel Leue of Colusa, Calif. He started the season with four top-10's in a row, won the Co-angler of the Year award in the Western Division and now ends the year with a win at the Everstart Championship on the Ouachita River.
Daniel Leue gets the hardware for winning the 2012 EverStart Championship in the Co-angler Division.
In three days Leue amassed a total of 20 pounds, 3 ounces for victory. He entered day three in third place and caught a five-bass limit weighing 6 pounds, 3 ounces to seal his win.

"I'm still shaking," said Leue after the win. "I seriously can't stop shaking! This is amazing. I have a long drive home to California maybe after a couple days of driving this will sink in."

During the week, Leue fished with pros Buz Craft, Matt Stoupa and Larry Jones. All of his pros fished the main river and most of the week his primary bait was a square-bill crankbait.

"I used a 6th Sense square bill and a KVD 1.5," Leue said. "The shad were everywhere on the surface and the fish were under them. I really just tried to cover as much water as possible. Sometimes I would get bit right on the bank and sometimes I'd get bit right at the boat over deep water. I never knew where my next bite was going to come from."

For his victory Leue won a Ranger Z117 equipped with a 90 h.p. outboard and is now seriously considering a move to the pro side.

"It's something I've been thinking about," Leue said. "I'm going to wait until the last possible minute and then decide. But either way, I love traveling and fishing tournaments -- this is so much fun."

Brantley second
Co-angler Audie Brantley of N. Augusta, S.C., finished second with a three-day total of 19 pounds, 3 ounces.
Co-angler Audie Brantley of N. Augusta, S.C., finished second with a three-day total of 19 pounds, 3 ounces worth $4,100.

During the week, Brantley fished with pros Jess Caraballo, Robbie Dodson and James Stricklin.

Today, while fishing with Stricklin, Brantley got a little "local help" from the Ouachita River.

Of course, Brantley did not consult anyone for his "local help," as that is against the rules. Instead, what happened is quite unreal.

"My pro James got hung up in a wad of fishing line," Brantley explained. "When he pulled all the line in it had a crankbait on the end of it. It was a square-bill - an RC 1.5, I think. I figured it must be a good local bait, so I cut off all the excess line, tied it on my rod and caught three keepers on it."

Spinks third

Tony Spinks of Springfield, Mo., finished third with a three-day total of 18 pounds, 9 ounces.

Spinks only caught one bass on the final day, but it was the right size, weighing 4 pounds even and giving him a chance at the title.Co-angler Tony Spinks of Springfield, Mo., finished third with a three-day total of 18 pounds, 9 ounces.

During the week Spinks caught most of his bass, including the big one, on various colors of War Eagle spinnerbaits.

Prince, Sward rounds out top five

Tony Prince of Pulaski, Tenn., finished fourth with a three-day total of 18 pounds, 8 ounces and Justin Sward of Birmingham, Ala., finished fifth with a three-day total of 18 pounds, 8 ounces.

Rest of the best

Niles Rallies for Co-angler Title

Niles Rallies for Co-angler Title

The Southeastern Division event on Lake Okeechobee presented by Power-Pole was a grind no matter if you were in the front of the boat or back. Bites were few and far between, and as a co-angler just catching a keeper or two kept you in the hunt. Niles started strong with an opening-day limit worth 18-9 to have him in the lead. On day two, he cooled off and brought a goose egg to the stage. Still, his day-one weight carried him to the final round where he started the day in fourth. Paired with Brett Preuett, Niles got to work Saturday. READ MORE »

Walters Punches for Guntersville Win

Kyle Walters of Grant Valkaria, Fla., won the 2018 Costa FLW Series Championship on Lake Guntersville with a two-day total weight of 44 pounds, 3 ounces. Walters punched grass mats for two days, utilizing the same approach in the same area as when he won the 2013 T-H Marine FLW Bass Fishing League Regional on Guntersville. The champ dropped 24-4 – the biggest limit of the event – on the scale today to hold off a charge by Bryan Thrift. READ MORE »

Jocumsen Glides to Guntersville Lead

Jocumsen Glides to Guntersville Lead

For the last four or five years, FLW pro Carl Jocumsen has been tinkering and testing, experimenting and dialing in ways to incorporate glide baits into his tournament arsenal. He’s been trying to figure out how it can shift gears from being a big-bass bait to a tournament tool. Apparently, he’s getting really close to nailing down those details. Today, Jocumsen used a glide bait to pound out a 20-pound, 2-ounce limit at Lake Guntersville to establish the lead at the 2018 Costa FLW Series Championship. “It’s one of those days you’ll never forget,” he says. “I hope I can back it up tomorrow.” READ MORE »

For the second time this season in the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division, a tournament was settled by tiebreaker after the top two pros finished the tournament with identical three-day weights. Tommy Dickerson of Orange, Texas, came into the final day at Fort Gibson in first place. Kyle Cortiana of Coweta, Okla., started the day in fourth. The two anglers finished the tournament with 32 pounds, 6 ounces. Because Dickerson was higher in the standings after day two, he was declared the champion. Fort Gibson Midday Update – Day 3

Fort Gibson Midday Update – Day 3

Things got a little crazy in the final-day action of the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division event presented by Mercury on Fort Gibson. First, falling water levels overnight threw a major curveball to tournament leader Tommy Dickerson and third-place angler Cody Bird. For the last two days both pros have been shimmying their way through a rocky shoal far up a feeder creek. Yesterday, both said if the water dropped just 3 or 4 inches, the small crevice they’ve been following through the shoal would dry up and they would be denied access. When they awoke and checked water levels this morning, indeed the water had dropped. READ MORE »

Fort Gibson Top 5 Patterns – Day 2

Fort Gibson Top 5 Patterns – Day 2

Getting off the beaten path. Finding something off the wall. Thinking outside the box. Trying something unconventional. These have all been the common themes of the top pros facing a very obstinate Fort Gibson Lake this week for the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division event presented by Mercury. To give some idea of just how stubborn Fort Gibson has been, only three pros have caught a limit both days of the tournament. Even more stunning is that the top-10 cut weight after two days among pros stands at just 18 pounds, 2 ounces. READ MORE »

Fort Gibson Midday Update – Day 2

Fort Gibson Midday Update – Day 2

Day two of the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division event presented by Mercury on Fort Gibson dawned much sunnier and breezier this morning. Anglers had high hopes that the wind might help improve the bite a smidge, but it’s remained tough. Tournament leader Kyle Cortiana got off to a fast start in his primary spot with two immediate keepers, but then his action died. READ MORE »

Top 5 Patterns from Fort Gibson – Day 1

Top 5 Patterns from Fort Gibson – Day 1

When looking out across Fort Gibson Lake on day one of the Costa FLW Series Southwestern Division event presented by Mercury, one word came to mind: stagnant. For the last couple of weeks, the late-summer doldrums have set in across northeastern Oklahoma with warm, humid conditions. Current is virtually nonexistent in the lake. Aside from a couple of showers this morning and a little afternoon breeze, the lake was calm for much of the day. In all, things were pretty stale. During the day, anglers struggled to crack the stagnant code. Local pros leaned heavily on their home field knowledge, pulling out all the stops by fishing brush piles, obscure rock formations and anywhere there might be a breath of current. Local pro Kyle Cortiana compounded his home court edge into the tournament lead with 15 pounds, 8 ounces. Behind him, 11- and 12-pound limits were enough to earn a top-five spot on day one.
