National Guard FLW College Fishing rolling to 1000 Islands

National Guard FLW College Fishing rolling to 1000 Islands
The fishing possibilities are numerous on the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario for the Stren Series Northern.

CLAYTON, N.Y. - National Guard FLW College Fishing is headed to 1000 Islands Aug. 18 for the fourth and final qualifying event in the Northern Conference 2012 season. Forty college teams will be competing for a top award of $5,000 and a berth in the Northern Conference Championship tournament which is being held Sept. 13-15 on Philpott Lake in Martinsville, Va.

"Anglers should focus on the smallmouth," said FLW Tour pro Adrian Avena, of Vineland, N.J., who started fishing FLW in college three years ago and placed 17th at the EverStart event in 2011. "There is a larger quantity of big smallmouth than kicker largemouth, but you have to be patient with the smallmouth and really stick with them.

"I would start deep, about 30 or more feet, drop-shotting tubes and wacky senkos, but it would be smart to have a back-up plan. Maybe try targeting isolated grass beds or docks. It will probably take about 17 or 18 pounds to win."

Anglers will take off from French Creek Marina located at 250 Wahl Street in Clayton, N.Y., at 6:30 a.m. Saturday. Weigh-in will be at the marina beginning at 12:30 p.m. Takeoff and weigh-in are free and open to the public.
