Walmart BFL Illini Division to host event on Ohio River
Anglers, bass trying to beat heat
GOLCONDA, Ill. – The Walmart Bass Fishing League is headed to the Ohio River at Golconda Aug. 6 for the fourth of five stops in the Illini Division. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will compete for top awards of up to $9,500 and $3,000, respectively.
“The heat has been unbelievable this year; this is going to be a tough tournament,” said Walmart FLW Tour pro Chad Morgenthaler of Coulterville, Ill. “Everything is going to be shad related. The bass are eating and trying to stay cool to survive.
“This is a great time of year to fish the main river. Use the current to your advantage. If you can find flow near any structure like points, eddies or wing walls, you’ll do fine.”
Morgenthaler continued: “In the morning I would start with small buzzbaits or Pop-Rs. Small baits work better than a big bait presentation. As the day progresses and the sun comes up, switch to a small finesse bait like a trick worm or shaky head. Weights are not going to be great, but I think it will still take about 13 or 14 pounds to win.”
Takeoffs and weigh-ins will be at Golconda Marina located at Rural Route 1 Highway 146 North in Golconda. Takeoff is scheduled for 6 a.m. while weigh-in will begin at 2 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.
The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, offering bigger prizes to those who qualify for regional championships and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Walmart BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the EverStart Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.
