TRENTON, Mich. – The FLW Bass Fishing League is headed to the Detroit River Sept. 18-19 for the final stop in the Michigan Division for a two day super tournament. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will be competing for top awards of up to $11,000 and $4,500, respectively.

“The mouth of the Detroit River is just explosive,” said FLW Tour pro Nate Wellman of Jenison, Mich., who has his FLW largest one day catch coming from the Detroit River. “Signs of fall are in the air and the bait fish have started their migration to the river; the mouth of the Detroit River has really turned on in the last couple of weeks. Crankbaits are going to be key for this tournament. Guys will also be catching the smallmouths shallow in about 4 feet of water using swimbaits, jerkbaits and spinnerbaits. The fish are really going to be aggressive as they start to store-up for the winter.”

Wellman went on to say that a cold front could actually help increase weights for this tournament as the fish will be feeding for the winter. He believes that if it’s not windy it could take 25 pounds per day to win.

Takeoff and weigh-in will be at Elizabeth Park Marina located at 200 Gross Ile Parkway in Trenton, Mich. Takeoff is scheduled for 6 a.m. while weigh-in will begin at 2 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The Detroit River BFL tournament is being hosted by Wayne County Parks.

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, offering bigger prizes to those who qualify for regional championships and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the American Fishing Series or even the FLW Tour.
