UPCOMING EVENT: PHOENIX BASS FISHING LEAGUE - 2020 - Sam Rayburn Reservoir

The All-American cut

The All-American cut
Two All-American competitors make early casts on day two in a cove not far from the takeoff site on DeGray Lake.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - The All-American cut isn't the manager's special at the local barber shop - at least not this week in central Arkansas. It's what the FLW Bass Fishing League's 55 best boaters and as many co-anglers are faced with today as they fish on DeGray Lake.

These accomplished fishermen are familiar with the concept of culling; they do it in every weekend tournament they fish throughout the year unless prohibited by species-management regulations. In a sense, the tables will turn by the end of Friday's fishing, when instead of tossing out the runts of the livewell, these All-American championship contenders will be aiming to avoid elimination. After today's weigh-in, only the 10 best boaters and 10 co-anglers will survive to fish Saturday's finale and keep hopes alive of a championship title and payday (the winning boater will earn as much as $130,000 and the winning co-angler will pocket up to $60,000).

Billy Bowen Jr. of Ocala, Fla., is one of the most experienced BFL boaters on DeGray this week, having fished it for nearly 20 years. He has also qualified for six All-American championships. Boater Billy Bowen Jr. and co-angler Eric Filburn talk before takeoff on day two.He currently sits in the middle of the pack in 28th with a one-day weight of 5 pounds, 9 ounces, but that's only 3 pounds, 10 ounces off the current top-10 cut weight - that's one decent bite on DeGray Lake, and Bowen has a plan.

"I'm fishing out deep mainly, off the stuff you can't see ... mainly buck brush upriver," he said. "I'm going to focus on one area today where I had some good ones on [yesterday] that came off."

Bowen said he's fishing a Smithwick Devil's Horse or Zoom Fluke on top in the morning and then spending most of the day fishing a jig with a Zoom chunk trailer in about 8 to 10 feet of water.

Bowen's day-two co-angler - Eric Filburn of Elizabethtown, Ky., who currently sits in 27th place - said he'll try to entice bass into biting by giving them what they want: baits that resemble shad in the main lake or ones that look more like a bluegill when fishing pockets. He's rigged either way with a Zara Spook or a swimbait.

It may seem as though Bowen and Filburn both have a long road to travel to make today's top-10 cut. But with relatively low weights crossing the scale yesterday due to the lake's slot limit in conjunction with hot, dead calm weather, both anglers are just one largemouth bass over 16 inches in length from a real shot at glory.

Stormy Start at Lake of the Ozarks

The final leg of the Costa FLW Series Central Division presented by Evinrude on Lake of the Ozarks will launch right as a massive cold front arrives. How massive? The forecast has been calling for heavy rain and a high of 74 today, and so far hasn’t been wrong. A major thunderstorm greeted anglers this morning and delayed takeoff by an hour and fifteen minutes thanks to abundant lightning. Tomorrow? A high in the mid 40s. READ MORE »

Grand Lake Midday Update – Day 3

St. Lawrence Midday Update – Day 2

With slightly warmer weather and similar sun and wind conditions, day two of the Costa FLW Series Northern Division presented by Gajo Baits on the St. Lawrence River should’ve presented optimal conditions for smallmouth. To Run or Not to Run

To Run or Not to Run

The final leg of the Costa FLW Series Northern Division on the St. Lawrence River, presented by Gajo Baits, is primed to be a smallmouth smashfest, as usual. That said, this year’s event, which is presented by Realtree Fishing, will launch out of Massena, N.Y., instead of the usual Clayton. So, what was once a 15-or-so-mile run to the mouth of the lake from takeoff – and roughly 30-plus miles to Gallo Island or Main Duck – will now be about a 95-mile run just to get to the lake. Underway on the Potomac

Underway on the Potomac

For the tournament, the wind isn’t forecast to be too strong any day, and the tides will be fairly standard, but not ideal from a timing standpoint. Today, low tide was at 6:15 a.m., and low tide on Saturday will be at 8:15. That means that pros will mostly be fishing a rising tide through the tournament, with the best windows likely coming early on Friday and Saturday. READ MORE »

Go-Time Again on Champlain

Go-Time Again on Champlain

Each of the last three years have seen the Costa FLW Series Northern Division presented by Gajo Baits kick off on Champlain. This tournament, which is presented by Polaris, should offer great fishing like usual, but the dominant pattern certainly won’t be spawning smallmouths. Instead, it could be a largemouth slugfest, as the fishing has continued to prove strong on the south end of the lake. READ MORE »
